| My horse was chasing my yearling about three weeks ago, tore a shoe off his hind foot and ever since then he has had off an on swelling in his back fetlock. He's gone to the vet, she advised to cold hose, use surpass, and compression wrap till I see improvement. Well going on three weeks and hosing, 2-3 times a day and as soon as I leave the compression wraps off for a couple hours it swells back up, I'm wondering how long I need to keep continuing until I should try something else or get worried? I haven't used my BOT boots, but I've thought about it, cold hose then let it dry, put those on to get the fluid moving and then compression wrap. I'm just afraid the heat will make it worse? I'm not sure, I thought about DMSO, but I've read mixed reviews on that. I know they're just unsightly blemishes in the end, but I caught it right away so typically they go away as opposed to when you don't notice them. He's not lame, I've ran him twice since the incident and he's been great. Also the vet suggested started using Adequan, which I'm seriously considering. Anyone know the average price for the 28 day load up doses? | |

| If no X-rays, I would go back get flexion tests and X-rays to rule out joint damage, and bone damage | |

| The vet was positive it was just tendon effusions, she did a full soundness exam on him a couple weeks before this incident because he was having soreness in his hocks. She actually said all the previous soreness was gone from that exam. | |

Valley vet seems to have the best prices online for adequan. I used the surpass under my back on track standing wraps along with the sore no more, I leave them wrapped for ALOT longer though. Together seems to work very good. Also like wrapping standard cotton standing wraps over numatiozine (*^sp).

I don't know if I understand you
Did she take xrays or not?
As to me a full soundness exam includes blocking xrays and ultrasound

| She didn't do xrays during the exam after he tore the shoe, but he was in a couple of weeks before for a full soundness where she did xrays, and flexion, there was no need to block him as he tested to the flexion there. But that was a completely unrelated problem. This incident was just some swelling from tearing his shoe off, which I treated for a week and then took him in to make sure she didn't think there was anything else and make sure I was on the right track for treating him. He was completely sound during that exam, and she checked him again from his full soundness two weeks prior and those issues had been resolved. He's not sore, and the swelling goes down when he starts moving around, it's like he's stocking up because it's been hot and he stands around in his barn all day. But the swelling is only localizing to where he got the injury from tearing his shoe off. So, I'm assuming he must have tweaked something and now since there was irritation it will just be more sensitive until it's healed? The vet did say they take a long time to resolve. I'm just getting sick of having to keep him compression wraps all the time, but I may have to until he decides he wants to be more active during the day. | |
