I need to set up a round pen and was hoping to get some input on what size and construction is best. What is everyones preference? I've had the metal panels in the past. I liked that they could be moved but also had a few scares with them.

I like a 50 ft for working but a smaller one for breaking and fooling with youngsters. Right now mine is just moveable panels, I'm wanting to build a wooden one for halter teaming older horses and for those that are to interested in everything else

50' - 60' is nice. I would love to have a wooden one built at some point, but currently just have move-able panels set up at 60' in diameter.

Mine is just galvanized corral panels. I used some 24' panels I already had, so it's not exactly "round" but close enough. I used (8) 24' panels and that gives me just a hair over 60' diameter. I haven't had any issues - but am considering putting plywood on the panels so nobody get's a leg caught or does something goofy.

Thanks y'all!

I was thinking I wanted to build a wood one with solid bottom for safety reasons. However being able to move the panels and making it larger and smaller is appealing. That's the dilemma. Any other suggestions would be great!

I have metal panels & they are ok if you have some pretty tame youngsters. If you had real real broncs, I would worry. Mine is 40 ft .

My neighbor has one built out of big truck tires. (Layers of tires stacked up ) It's super safe! I've only seen some real bad horses knock a couple of tires off the top. The only downside is you have to spray them for mesquites because they hold water.

I was considering using large round bales. Its safe but would just have to keep them moving so they eat up the bales :)

50 ft is our preference on size and 6 foot for height is really best too. Panels work fine, the heavier the better. Open Panels or wood, dirt will build up on the side and sift out of the pen. Solid sided panels or pen needs reinforcement on the bottom, so that dirt build up does not bulge or break the sides. My experience.

Joe Rpberts weding in Ringling Ok makes the best panels. You need a front end loader to move one. They will not move or tare up.

I've seen a neat DIY round pen where they put t-posts in the ground and stuck pallets over them... That's probably hard to visualize lol but it seemed like a neat idea, I would be concerned that they wouldn't be tall enough... But a neat idea nonetheless
I wish I could find the picture... If I find it, I'll post it

If your in an area with cedar try a cedar rail round pen. I love the 7' height. My husband has built them from 8' down to 6' and I really like the 7'.
I love breaking babies in a 35' pen. But I really use a 60' pen more often as I start them. Currently my pen is pipe with a cable on the outside that the cedar is tied to. It takes a while to build this type pen but I've found it very forgiving and super safe for me and the horse.

The place where I keep my horse I think it's between 45 and 50 feet; I prefer a 60 footer especially for working grown horses.
