It's 81 degrees, but 77% humidity.... something has to drop before I can safely ride, right? I usually wait until around 8pm to ride when I know it's safe, but I have to get another horse rode and wanted to do it on my lunch break.

Man, if I had to wait for better humidity/temperature here in South Texas, I would never get to ride, lol. That is what it is here at 8 am. Just make sure you walk a lot and offer him some water during your ride. Take it easy. I usually walk more than I trot or lope. I will ride for 45 minutes to an hour because of that. Don't start off riding that long if you and your horse aren't used to it.

I think its like humans. GO by the feel of your horse. If they seem more winded than usual, excessive sweating, fatigue, I would back off. Maybe provide electrolyes when your done. I give electrolytes daily all summer not just the days I ride. The best thing is to be hydrated before you start, not recover after your dehydrated. I coach HS tennis and my players have to drink a gallon of water during the day BEFORE every practice.

I would ride. That doesn't sound bad although you'll both probably get winded easier from the air being thick.

Thanks!  The humidity isn't normally THIS bad, but it's looking like a good chance for rain... another reason why I need to get one rode!  I think I will ride my gelding (he just needs walk/trotting for today) and save the horse that needs loping for later.

I'm curious what type of electrolytes everyone uses. And how you administer it.

I use Animal Element's In the Zone paste for an electrolyte.

This is what I was going off!  Curious if anyone used it at a rule of thumb.  I do at night, but I know that for most races during the day around here the conditions would be "unsafe".

It's 84 degrees and 77% humidity here right now and IMO it's nice out.  I don't even look at heat index until ambient temp is above 90.

So that chart is overly cautious for me.

I think it needs to be adjusted based on where you live. If you are acclimated to heat and humidity, 150 is pretty low. According to that scale, it's 156 outside right now and I wouldn't hesitate to ride. It's Florida, I'm a native and my horses are used to it.

Saw this a couple weeks ago on FB:

The last 2 weeks of June it was 100+ degrees with 100% humidity...it was miserable. Stand outside and sweat just standing there.

The heat index here has rarely been below 150 over the past 2 weeks. I keep telling myself I'm going to ride during the day, but as soon as I step outside, I realize that's stupid, for both me and our horses. We ride at night, usually after 8pm. We generally limit our riding to about a half hour per horse and we hose them off thoroughly when we're done.

Oklahoma has dry heat?  I thought dry heat could be found more likely in areas of Arizona.  I don't think a place with humidity like Oklahoma is considered a dry heat? Oklahoma is a humid place, not as humid as say Houston, but still hot and humid. A dry heat would be a place with little to no humidity.  Maybe Oklahoma just feels humid to me in the summer. lol

Here in South Ga we easy get up to 95+....and have some of the worst humidity ever. I usually ride mine during the day I figure they need to be conditioned for it all shows are not early in the morning or late at night. When the temps get over 95 I might do just light riding till the heat wave passes and we are back below 95.

I just checked your weather. The present temperature said 79 degrees with 83% humidity.  It probably still feels pretty yucky with that humidity. I checked Tulsa, OK. The temperature in Tulsa was 85 degees with 66% humidity.  85 degrees or 79 degrees in the evening sounds like it would be really nice and comfortable, but with the humidity it is still sticky and feels warm and stuffy.

I use that chart as a rough guideline. I feel like a pansy because the times I've watched the heat index it's been right around 120 and I've been dying haha. But it's dry heat here and low humidity....when the sun is out it kills me so I usually ride at night when it "feels" cooler.
