Elite Veteran Posts: 602 Location: out in Oklahoma	I am getting plans and ideas together to build a barn/house combination. I have found a plan that I really like BUT apparently the problem is that it will be a barn and a house connected as one with no separation of buildings. Talked to a lady at an independent insurance office today who said that it would be outrageously expensive (like doubled) if I were to build a barn and a house connected and not separated at all. Does anyone have any input or can anyone provide me a direction to go because I am ready to get this show on the road but don't want to be paying out the wazoo for insurance.

Shelter Dog Lover Posts: 10277	We used to live in a house/barn combo and it did not effect our insurance at all. We were with St. Farm.

Elite Veteran Posts: 725	It is true that not every company that writes home insurance will want to write a barn/home combination but we have alot of them insured and its no big deal. I would certainly not let that bother me if that is what you are wanting to build.

Shelter Dog Lover Posts: 10277	We sold ours without any issues. The buyers had a conventional loan, put 20% down. It was a big mortgage too, sold it for 630k.

Ours is insured through Kentucky Farm Bureau. I have a house / garage / barn / arena in mine. They never told us that we could not keep hay in our barn. Never had any issues.

Veteran Posts: 221 Location: Alabama	I have one in Alabama and I am insured through State Farm. I also keep my hay in the barn with no issues. I will say that my insurance has doubled since I originally got it 8 years ago. I don't know if it has anything to do with the house/barn combo or just State Farm raising rates.
