Money Eating Baggage Owner Posts: 9586 Location: Phoenix	I live in AZ and feel the need to feed electrolytes because my horse does sweat a lot. I started putting the Apple a Day brand electrolytes in his feed but he ate around it--and he's NOT a picky eater. I know they self-regulate depending on what they need so I was thinking of just leaving a couple handfuls of it in a bucket....what do you think? Or should I make sure he gets it?

One of my geldings thinks that anything you add to his feed is poison and even he will eat them mixed in his grain! I have fed them for about two years and feed them all summer and most of the winter just to keep them drinking.

How much are you feeding of it? Mine have a small scoop and I think it is 1 oz or so a day. I put mine in their water buckets in their stalls if they are locked up.

I have had horses get thumps when I've fed electrolytes with prefix feed - thumps are caused by an electrolyte imbalance. So I wonder if maybe that's the reason he's not eating it. Maybe he's already getting what he needs. Himalayan rock salt or Redmans Rock salt might be a good option.

I started to hang them in there so they wouldn't be so bored. They can come and go out of the barn, but I have fly spray systems so they prefer to stand around in there during the heat of the day. It has a nice breeze that blows through as well. They just stand around, lick some salt and poop. Always lots of poop.
