Location: Charlestown, IN | I have a 3 year old filly who has been at the trainer for a week, came home for a week (trainer is out of town at a big show), and supposed to go back next week. She had been stalled so we thought it'd be best to keep her turned out. She hung her foot in the woven wire fence and tore a huge chunk of her bulb/heel/coronet. Called Vet and he said to pressure bandage it for 3 days and then see how it is and go from there.. She is DEAD lame. She tip toes. She's on Sulpha drugs and got bute. Anyone have injuries like this? How long did it take to heal etc? She's supposed to go back to the trainer Sunday but I don't see that happening. Ugh..

Location: Louisiana | We had one with a similar injury, I wish I still had pics. He was 2 when it happened and he just about ripped his foot off. He sliced all around the back of his fetlock, and then down through the coronet band. We didn't even call a vet as there's nothing you can really do for that. Just got him an antibiotic for infection and made sure his tetanus was utd.
We doctored it with Underwoods. Forever it seemed like. Thinking back I would guess he stayed stalled for about 4-6 weeks. Then once everything was closed up, hubby had him gelded and kicked him out for the winter.
We just sold him as a 5yo. The foot gives him no trouble at all. It's the ugliest thing you've ever seen though. He has a nasty scar that goes across the back of his foot, and all the way down his hoof wall. It will always be like that. His hoof wall actually flexes slightly, where the scar is. He just wears shoes on the front. Although it isn't brittle or anything, but he is tender footed.
You would never know he had a foot like that unless you saw it. |

Location: North Dakota | I had a horse who was injuried quite a bit worse than you are describing, so I'm not sure if this helps at all.
He cut his left front foot on barbed wire, from the front of his hoof, and all the way down and through the bottom of the frog. When we got the vet to him, he started gushing blood as the vet was working on him. It's a miracle he didn't bleed out in the pasture. At the time, we did lots and lots of Epsom salt soaks. Initially, we kept it bandaged until the "gore" healed up. And just gave it time. It was a full year before I actually rode him again, and by some miracle, he was 100% sound. Went back to barrel racing with him with no problem. His hoof looked funny after the fact, but I was just thrilled he was sound.
For what you are describing, I would say it's gonna be a few months until it is healed.

Location: ND | My 3 year old was off for a good 6 weeks after he sliced his heel open last year. He was never lame on it but it had to have stitches, daily bandage changes & stall rest to get it healed nicely. |

Location: East Texas | Have being going through the same thing. It has been 9 weeks and we have doctored it with Underwoods/baking powder and it is slowly but surely healing. Doesn't look good, but he is sound. We did put him on antibiotics for the first 5 days to make sure he didn't get an infection in the bone. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Yept been there too with my gelding, he torn his off and a big chunk of hoof, he was sore but not realy lame, it took about 3 months of healing befor he could go back to his big pasture, I dont ride him he has his own pasture with his buddys but not because of the cut food hes crippled up from a accident he had when he was a 2 year old. |

Location: Gainesville, TX | We've had a few horses get cut right behind their fetlock above the coronet band. Seems like if they are going to get tangled in wire, this is one of their favorite places to do it. All have come back fine after some time, just had an ugly scar. |

It's going to have proud flesh I'm sure, just by the looks of it. I guess in the 3 days time, we'll see if it's healing or needs cut off? She is not near as lame this morning thank goodness. |

Mine had a flap, I just put the flap back in place and wraped it really good but most of his bulb was gone just pressure wraped it and left it alone a few days then I changed out the wrap doctored it and rewraped did this about every 3 days and then when it started the healing I went to once a week. |

Location: Texas | Yes, And I will add pictures as I can. Wish I had pictures of the original injury. My 2-year-old got her foot hung up in a fence and pulled back, tearing the back part of her foot off up to her coronary band. She was in a cast for 2 weeks and then bandaged for months. She had numerous regional antibiotic treatments and still went sporadically lame. Eventually she was able to wear a glue on shoe and then go barefoot. Didn't know if she'd be sound enough to ride. Ten months later she was lame again. Farrier thought it as a hoof abcess so we poulticed it and it blew out. Days later she was still lame. Did X-rays and she had a bone infection most likely from the original injury. Took her to a surgeon and they removed the infected bone (some of her coffin bone). Days later she contracted an infection in her coffin joint. Surgeon was optimistic, so had the joint flushed, and she came home to bandage changes every three days till the defect grew out and antibiotics. It was been a long journey, an emotional roller coaster. She will never be a riding horse so she was bred as a 3-year-old.
I'm hoping your filly's injury is not nearly as severe as ours. I would have her seen ASAP to make sure there are no complications such as a cut into a bone or joint. I would not send her back to the trainer at this point and recommend getting a reputable vet's opinion if/when she can go back into training.

It is pressure wrapped. Took it off after 3 days and then last night after 2 days. The vet wanted to see her progress. He has us cold hosing and alternating 2 different types of topical antibiotics. She is also on Sulpha pills for 8 days, twice a day. He did say to cut the floppy part off. That was our biggest thing, we didn't know if we should or not..
How long did it take yours to heal? |

How long did it take yours to heal?
I had a really nice colt do that. We cut the floppy part off, and kept it wrapped. I think it was a month to 6 weeks until it healed enough to ride. |
