| What do you all ask to have done with a vet check? We will be looking at a horse for my hubby this evening and if we like him enough want to have him vetted. I was thinking he should at least have a flexion test and go from there. He is a 7 year old, western pleasure/trail horse. We will be using him for trail riding (mountain riding). I already have two here that are having soundness issues, so don't want a third with issues. |

| The vet should know what a traditional "pre purchase exam" is (heart, lungs, teeth, eyes, etc), and then move into a flexion test. We x-ray all the horses we buy, but I'm buying performance horses not trails. I would at least get good images of his front feet and maybe the hocks. |

Location: Beggs, OK | Do a complete blood chemistry on him as well as checking for common drugs in his stystem. The blood chemistry should tell you if he has any current health issues that might not be visible. Also ask them about the feed, deworming, and maintenance program that he's been on. |

Location: Montana | Tell your vet what you are planning to do with the horse and ask what he/she recommends. I'd trust xrays more than a flex test.
As for what I ask a vet to look at - just two things: teeth and testicles. Ha! |

I have had vets pull blood and store it so i could wait and see if the horse comes unglued before spending the money on the drug tests.I would at least do that |
