Location: East TN | Wanting to clean up my old saddle a bit. Ive heard of people using 60 and 100 grain sandpaper on the roughout part. Can anyone give me some insight on the steps to do so? Or what kind of results you achieved. Thanks in advance! |

Location: KS | From what I know, you dont want to use any oil or leather cleaner on the roughout. I've heard of some people cleaning them and then conditioning them, but it leaves an oily residue. I would suggest a scrub brush or fine wire brush, brush the rough out up and clean in up that way. If there are stains maybe use a little water and dish soap, also heard of someone putting baking soda on the stains only and then brushing it off, I have never tried this, i normally just try to brush mine clean.

Location: between here and there | I've used sandpaper for years with good results. Usually from the roughout going smooth rather than from dirt. If the dirt is greater, soap and water first, then follow with the sandpaper. You can even use it on the seat to help rough it back up. Stay with the grain - not against it. I then just use a stiff brush to finish it. |

^^^THIS........Additionally, if the dirt is really stuck in there, I have used a hard, round, pointed toothpick to get in there and follow the tooling lines......sometimes, you gotta do, what you gotta do....to get the dirt out..............lol |

What I do is wash my entire saddle with hose and bucket filled with soap - dont use the green soaps as it dries out saddle worse
I scrub the entire saddle and let it dry in shade
the next day I take sandpaper and scrub the rough out- when you first start it will be scary and you will think - what did I do - just keep going to you have everything evenly scrubbed - its an amazing difference - then I take olive oil and rub the leather (not the rough out) and let it dry in shade - you will have a new saddle |
