Expert Posts: 2128	What are you guys doing with your horses that know the pattern really well but havent been hauled enough to be finished. I dont want to drill the barrels 3 times a week still..dont want to burn him out..but want him to be able to work well on the weekends. Hubby is roping on him today.. Veteran Posts: 204 Location: Texas	You can work the barrels without working the pattern. Set up 1 barrel, set up straights and do all lefts, all rights or figure 8's. Away from the barrels you can work the fence, poles or trees in the pasture.

Extreme Veteran Posts: 316	If you have pasture land that is great for them to get out away from the arena!!! (Essential I feel) Moving cattle keeps their mind sharp. Even if you have a few steers out in a pasture herd them around and get his mind off the arena for awhile

You would be amazed at how much "Barrel" training you can get done with NO BARRELS. Maybe you have an open field with weeds etc. I will make them randomly turn trees, bushes, clumps of grass. It really makes them listen to "Me" without having to do the same pattern over and over. Getting them out of the arena is the main thing.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1094 Location: Idahome	You can use old tires all set in differnt places to work on circles. They won't get burned out on turning a barrel all the time. You will also be amazed how much good roping on them will do. I like to put all my horse on the poles as well just to do something different with them.

Posts: 6343 Location: Cap'n Joan Rotgut.....alberta	My horses dont see barrels at home.......and im riding 2 younger ones right now......i work them at home maybe a dozen times and i start entering them.......i ride out in the pasture i have access to as many miles as i can possible want to ride.......m
