Location: North Dakota | Well, I wanted to get a base-line of how Cash responds without a bit. So I rode him in a rope halter with a rope covered nose. I was pleasantly surprised at how well he responded. I only walked and trotted him, as he has only been undersaddle again for a week and we haven't gotten to cantering yet in his conditioning. Steering was a little sketchy at first but he caught on quickly. By the end I could stop just as well as in a bit and steer like 90% as well. I think he'll need something with a little more control when we add more speed or go out on the trail, but now I know where to start! He really seemed to love it. He was very relaxed, lots of licking and chewing. He even moved out better than ever. Usually asking him to trot is like asking him to donate a kidney. I really think a hack will be the right choice for him.

Does anyone use just a good ole' sidepull? I'm thinking maybe just the halter or sidepull will work for riding around at home and maybe one of the hacks you guys mentioned, or I also was looking at the Bozo's and Little S's for competing or out on the trail where he may have a spook.
I use something similar to an enduro bridle. Wanted something like it, but didn't want to pay the high price, so I just made one. Works great on my snotty little pony, I don't barrel race him though. He fights me with most bits, but doesn't fight with this. I've ridden him and just a rope sidepull too, but the one I have now works better on him. |

Location: MT | I like a Sliester hack on a horse that needs whoa and not a lot of bend.
Little S has the least amount of whoa of any hack that I've ever used. |

Location: Louisiana | My first choice and my very favorite is the Don Wasson Hack! Love it! I also like the Bobby Stiver by Reinsman short shank. Both have plenty of whoa or loosen the curb and makes it even lighter, plus plenty of bend. Awesome for heavy hands. |

| I have a mare that never liked bits since she was a baby. I put her in a little s and she was great. She is a very ratey, doesn't need much help horse. Like the others have said, there is no bend in it, and that's why I'd probably say it would be better suited to the rubber bandy type horse you have. It won't make him bend in half when you ask for the turn. (I don't like a fold in half type horse)
I will disagree though that there isn't enough whoa in the little s. I haven't tried many other hacks, so I won't say it doesn't have less than the others, but I find it had plenty enough for my mare. If you are concerned about brakes (like, he's troublesome to stop with a bit) you may find if he likes the hack, he might stop better because you aren't pulling on his mouth.
I ran my mare in the little s for almost 3 years, but she was getting too stiff in the little s, so I switched to a combo bit, she still had the noseband pressure she loved in the little s, but I had control of her face to get some bend to her with the bit.
Honestly, if he rode good in a covered rope halter, I wouldn't count out the little s, and it helps you can pick those up really cheap to try. |

Interesting. The 2 of them are kind of opposites. Horse A I stiffer and needs some bend, but doesn't need a ton of whoa (like the equivalent of a snaffle). He's the one I rode in the rope halter. Horse B is the rubber band that needs very little on the pattern, but for slow work needs something he can be stopped in when he gets worked up (which is often...) He may need 2 different hacks.
