My question is has anyone ever dealt with a horse that supposedly his suspensory ligaments in the hind legs are "breaking" down? My farrier has told me this and I have done a search here and on the internet. This is not from an injury as he barely gets rode. I did barrel race and rope on him (till I had to go back to work). So for the last 2-3 years he has basically been a pasture horse. He is barefoot and has been for the last 5 years. He is not limping or anything like that but the farrier has to keep alternating his back feet when he trims. Also if this is the case, shouldn't the heel of the foot be kept high in the back? Anyone have any insight on this. Maybe another farrier on here? I have not had him x-rayed or anything yet.

A trip to the vet would be in order for me. Just so you know for sure. Could be many things....stifles, SI, hocks etc.

Hmmmmmm, just to understand, the farrier alternates his back feet trimming him because it's hard for the horse to stand on just one too long?
And that is the basis for your farrier saying his suspensories are breaking down?
If this is the case, I don't buy it completely. The horse could be experiencing soreness and doesn't like to stand on one leg to long or flex the other too long for other reasons, hocks come to mind.
I think I would have to get a lameness vet's opinion on it before I believed it.

Yes that is what the farrier said that it was easier on the horse to alternate the hind feet when trimming. The horse is 17 years old. I thought we had already went through the hocks issue when he was younger and I was racing and roping off him. But as I said he really has not been used that hard in his lifetime. Not like being on the road every weekend. I personally just can't see it and he looks nothing like the pictures I saw on the internet. He is overweight I will admit that and I am working on that and I use THE supplements and they have helped. Just do not want it to go further if that is the case. Yes I will get in touch with a lameness vet and find out for sure. I have just had a lot of extra bills go out these last 2-3 months because of all the rain we have had and trying to get caught up.
