| Love the ladybug hack on a strong horse. It fits low on the nose and gives you bend and brakes. |

| Molly Powell Rate and Turn bit. Looks like a lot of bit but its not. I had a 15 yr old mare and she was set in her ways. She was strong running, I threw this bit on her and she did great with it. Didn't have to be heavy handed.

vjls - 2015-07-18 5:25 PM caparks - 2015-07-18 7:44 PM My finished mare has been running through every bit I put in her mouth for a run. It's frustrating because she is has all the fancy training outside the barrel pen, and works in just a loose ring snaffle. (Collection, spins, stops, flexing.) But as soon as she gets in the shoot she becomes so strong. And she's not a small mare. 15h and about 1500lb of pure muscle. She's huge and has an even bigger motor. She use to run in just a Jr CowHorse but the past few weeks she's realizing just how strong she is. Any one have suggestions for bits to try out? And its not that she doesn't want to run, or is burnt out like some horses. Its that she wants to do her job a little too much and I have no rate. sometime less is more we went way up on ours but it just got worse sent to a gag with diferent mouth ps to change up
also dan and vicki suggested let her roll then she come back to u and she didÂ
completely agree with this! you have to let them roll and then bring them back to collect to turnÂ
I have to completely agree with these two!
I have a, now 20 year old DTF gelding that I bought 8 years ago. He is a HARD running, HARD dropping, barrel hitting son of a gun with an even harder mouth.
And I went rounds with him trying to get him light. Nothing worked. Until I all but gave up by putting a short shank, square mouthed LW bit on him. All I did was keep him between my hands and let him roll. He started clocking like crazy and we haven't hit a barrel in 2 years.
I don't believe the change in him came from the bit. It was the way I rode him. I stopped picking on him, stayed off his face and only used my hands to communicate with him only when I NEEDED to.
Not to say this didn't come from A LOT of trial and error! But I think some of these horses are more finished then we give them credit for.

| And I think it's vital to find a bit your horse likes AND works well in your hands. I ride several different bits...they're fascinating to me. But I find myself going back to the same four or five.
I know for a fact I hate the way an o-ring feels in my hands, outside of riding colts (but I try to transition them as soon as I can, appropriately of course). I see girls running finished horses in them, and have people telling me "Oh you could so run this or that horse of yours in an o-ring". Maybe someone could, but I know from experience O-rings do not feel good in MY hands no matter what horse I'm on.
Horses, and performance horses especially, are just a constant series of trying and re-trying. |

Location: Back in MT BABY!!! | First thing first...I would check for any soreness. But as far as bits go different people like the feel of different bits...and not every bit is going to work for every person. These tend to be purely personal choices I would just go with a longer shank of the bit you used to run in. I usually ride in smooth mouth pieces and run in twisted or a port...i ride a lot with my body though. Some people like to ride in twisted or ports and run in a smooth, because they ride more with their hands...it's personal preference based on how you ride. |
