It is so hot that I have been parking my car under the big tree in my yard.  Well, the tree gunk was on my car.  Went to the car wash, used the foaming brush and looked pretty good, butsome of the gunk did NOT come off.  Now I am going to hand wash   at home but not sure what to use.  Is Dawn ok to use and not hurt the paint?  Or what else would you suggest.

We always use Dawn to wash our cars. It does strip any wax off of it, FYI.

Yep Dawn is the safest if your using something you have. If not run to the store and get some car wash soap.

Thanks. I didn't want to hurt the paint but wasn't sure.

I've washed tons of boats that had tree gunk on them. Believe it or not, bleach eats that stuff off so fast it will make you blink... We had one of those bug sprayer- pump up bottles and I'd just spray it on straight, wait 3-5 minutes and hit the area with a soapy wipe then rinse and everything is clean.

If you use dawn be sure to spray wax it afterward. Otherwise the color of your car may fade quicker as it takes any wax or protective coating off of the paint.

I use McGuires spray wax for black vehicles on my car and wax at night when the metal is cool and out of direct sunlight.  Microfiber rag to rub it in and a clean micorfiber rag to polish it. Takes me about 15 min to wax my whole car and about 30min to wax my SO's full size truck. Well worth it. Plus if it has wax on it and you get tree gunk on it, you can get it off wayyyy easier.

And the bleach will not hurt the paint?

I don't know if boats and cars are painted differently... But I used it on boats that cost way more than any car you ever saw and it never hurt any of the paint jobs.

I would take it and have it detailed and put a nice coat of wax on it!

 That's incredibly condescending.

Turtlewax Zipwash. Have used it for years. Has a little wax in it.

Boat are painted with different types of paint. It's more of a gel type paint that can stand up to salt water. Car paint is tough, but fragile in a lot of ways. Dawn will get some gunk off, but it's not a good idea to use it on your car. It will strip the wax off and can eventually cause the paint to fade if you aren't careful. If you use any dish soap, definitely put a good coat of wax on afterwards. There are products made to use on car paint that'll take the tree junk off of your paint. It just depends on how much you really value your paint job/vehicle. Some people only ever use dish soap, but they may not keep their vehicles for 20 years, so it doesn't affect them. If you plan on keeping it for a long time, and the paint looks good now, I'd use car wash soap, not dish soap. Those foam washes aren't all that great anyway. There's probably more dirt in those bristles than on your car. Using a good microfiber cloth and some car soap will probably get most if not all of it off.

OK... I do remember using it on my truck down here to get tons of tree gunk off. But I had the truck repainted about 12 years ago up in Idaho and I had a clear coat put on it. That might have protected it. From what I find online it's not a good idea to use it on cars.

Dawn works great. Cheaper than the high end stuff and works just as good. Some of the name brand car wash jugs will leave bad water spots. My grandpa is a hot rod/drag car builder and he uses Dawn 99% of the time. Never had any issues. It would take a lot of time for your clear coat to start weakening from just Dish Soap. You would have to have no clear coat for color fading as clear coat is a thick layer that protects it. Your color might look dull and faded, but it's your clear coat thinning out.

Note: if you do wax your car afterwards, be careful. Some waxes can also weaken your clear coat. I love Lucas's Quick Wax. Takes longer, but well worth it.
