| My saddle it too tight on my mare around the gullet area, and the pummel is hitting her withers.. But if I get a wider gullet isn't it going to make the pummel even lower to her withers? She has dry spots around the shoulder area, and I can't even squeeze a finger under there, so I know I need a different saddle..
Any suggestions?
I'll try to measure tonight and see what my saddle is. |

Location: Kansas | Have you actually tried taking her in to get professionally fitted? What's the gullet width on your current saddle? |

I'm honestly not sure how to find someone to get her fitted in my area.. I'll have to measure tonight to see what my saddle is. And maybe I can get some pictures if that would help |

Location: between here and there | There are many brands that have high wither clearance! That's what you need to look for and make sure it also opens up for the shoulders
which doesn't mean wider, just higher! |

Yes and no.
Unfortunately, saddle fit is not straight forward.
Gullet only tells you how far apart the bars are. If your current saddle is too tight on your mare, then YES you need a large gullet size.
However, changing the gullet size may or may not change the bar angle. And that is more what dictates how the saddle sits on your horse's shoulders (or rather, slightly behind them). So it sounds like your gullet is too small on your current saddle but your bar angle is too large which causes her withers to be hit.
Just sounds like a BAD fit all-around.
Take a look at these websites. It can give you some insight on how to fit a saddle.
http://saddlemakers.org/id193.htm
http://www.rodnikkel.com/content/tree-and-saddle-fitting/factors-that-affect-tree-fit/
And a few visual aides for you.
Bar angles are all the same, but the gullet width is different.

And how that gullet width can affect how the bars sit on your horse. Example 1 is too narrow. Example 3 is too wide.

| Thank you so much! The visual aids to help a lot! Does anyone happen to know how Corriente saddles tend to fit with a 7" gullet? I have one I've been looking at, but don't want to buy if it's going to be another bad fit. It's FQHB |

So I didn't get pictures, but my saddle is a 7inch gullet and FQHB.. The person who I was talking to yesterday told me I need a SQHB if it's pinching in that area.. Wouldn't that make it tighter? |

Fqhb, and sqhb are misleading terms too, some tree manufacturers will have a FQHB a 90 degree and others will have that a sqhb.
My guess is your horse has muscle atrophy in the wither area, yes you probably need a larger gullet, and my guess is a wider bar then what you have, and you will need to shim until the wither area muscle fills in again. |

I actually just ordered a new shim saddle pad.. Mine pad wasn't very nice at all! I'm hoping that will help a litte while I look for a different saddle. I wish I knew a plce to go and try saddles on her so I would know what to look for! |
