| I'm wondering about my Palomino and her coloring. She has changed different colors since she was born, to a yearling, and now as a 4 year old. Most of my horses don't change colors until their winter hair comes in. This girl is getting darker right now and actually shedding hair in July. I gave her a bath the other day and she looked like a dark chesnut. I'm not sure what she is doing! Her dad is a chocolate palomino and her mom is a bay. Does anyone know if palominos get darker with age? And she has black hairs coming in on her legs and flank area. And her mane is getting more and more black hairs and darker at the roots. What does that mean? Someone said it had something to do with the sooty gene. I attached some pics. Thank you in advance for you help!

Location: SE KS | I have somewhat the same issue, with my colt, Sire is Perlino, Mare is Chestnut= 50/50 Buckskin or Palomino.
He has black in his mane & tail, but doesn't seem to have any black on his legs, ear tips are dark muzzle is dark!!!
Not sure what he's gonna end up!!!!
Your horse is very pretty in all her colors!!!!

| Thank you! Yea it definitely peaks my interest! I have had palominos before but never this weird color and changing colors! I noticed that Sherry Cervi's horse stingray has changed colors over the years, I wonder why that is??

Location: Peg-Leg Julia Grimm | I don't think "they" know what causes some of the shades of color. But this is MY theory. I think when you have a cream gene but it's on red, any agouti (bay or brown) gene that is in the mix shows up as black hairs in the otherwise white mane/tail and various other places on a red horse. I had (she passed away in 2010) a red mare who was from a bay and a brown with a recessive red gene on both. She got the red but was still carrying at least one agouti (she could have been homozygous for agouti). She had a lot of black hairs mixed in her tail. I bred her to a palomino and got a palomino who I still own. I bred the palomino to a black (no agouti) and got a BAY filly. My old red mare must have passed at least one agouti to the palomino mare (who also has lots of black hairs in her mane) who passed the agouti to a baby who would have been black except for the agouti she got from her mother.
I theorize that the sooty look might be agouti having a little influence on some areas of the horse. I could be wrong. I haven't come across anyone that can tell me why red and palomino horses have black hairs mixed with their red or white manes. That's all I got.  |

Location: OREGON | I wish I knew the answer. I had a filly born really light, almost perlino looking. Then she turned almost chocolate palomino. Then, by the time she was 4 she was light colored again. I sold her. But, often wonder what color she is now, lol. |
