Yesterday a family member of mine opened the pasture gate and the 2 horses were around a corner, not visible- gate got left open. We have cattle and as you all know, with cattle comes lots of bad stuff once the horses are out! I was able to figure out that they could've been out for 1 hour at the most. When I was headed out the driveway I noticed them in the feed shed at the large mound of cracked corn. There was no poop around and I had just put them out an hour ago so I was completely ignorant and figured they had just got to the corn. This is where I know, I should've went to the vet and got them pumped. But it just didn't seem bad at the moment. So I put them away and off I went. I kept a close eye on both of them last night and they acted completely normal. (Gum color, no heat in the feet, not rolling, kept eating, etc)

This morning is where it really hit me, their manure was loose and full of corn. They still act normal but they ate more than I had imagined. I have been in contact with my vet today and she was very concerned although it is too late to pump with charcoal or anything. Since it has been more than 24 hrs now we are in the clear for colic but founder is the next thing. My vet said to drylot, give banamine and old, dry hay. And pray.
I just don't know what to do. One of them is a very high dollar barrel horse and it makes me absolutely sick to think of him foundering. And how did I not take it seriously at first, I have no idea. Is there anything in the meantime I can do? I've heard of soaking or icing the hooves...?
I forgot to ask my vet but are our chances any better considering they have been acting normal the whole time and don't seem affected other than the appearance of their manure?

Relax,

Founder is not the end of the world.

Your vet is right banamine, my vet always said to give it every 12 hrs if I suspected laminitis.

Check for pedal pulses, if they are bounding, get the feet into ice

Now I have more time to comment

You are at the 24 hour mark or just over, I have only ever seen one horse founder from grain and the horse was in barley overnight ( not my horse) within 12 hours the horse had pedal pulses and feet were warm, we stood that horse in the river for the next 12 hours.

If you want to be proactive, if you have a game ready use it, but for pressure have it on the lowest.

I would say by 48 hours without a symptoms you are in the clear.

Horses can founder for many different reasons, and a coffin bone rotation of 8 degrees the white line may never separate so unless you xray you would never know.

I have one mare who foundered for a different reason, she rotated 4 degrees, she is sound barefoot, and if you were to look at her feet no sign of founder, X-rays look clean now coffin bone back where it should be in relation the hoof wall.

As I said in the beginning, relax you are doing everything you can at the present, you have contacted the vet, you have given the banamine, now it is a waiting game.

If you have a bounding pedal pulse, then get into the rive, or get the buckets of ice, if you don't have the pulse good news

Also some horses can handle a lot more starch then others, and some horses will just stand there with their head in the door and not eat much.

No advice. Prayers for your horses and try not to stress too much. It has happened no going back. Sounds good so far. Hope all ends well.

Nothing has changed really.. Manure is slowly going back to normal and there's less corn visible. But I will be on the lookout for founder for a month or so.

I left a voicemail with my vet but I haven't heard back from her. Does anyone on here know about how long it typically takes a horse to show signs of foundering from a situation like this? Luckily I have never had to deal with founder. Their feet feel just like normal and they got the corn overload just over 2 days ago

Thank you SO much! I am starting to relax finally :-)
