I personally think the digestive tract has to be in good working order for oral joint supplements to work.  If the horses gut isn't right then they will not absorb the supplement very well, and when you don't see an improvement then you don't think it's working.  I agree many supplements don't work as they are advertised.  I inject when needed and that definately works, but if they are sore and their bellies hurt, then no supplement is going to make anything right.   I'm at the point where there are too many options so I just don't want to do a **** thing!

Oh this was me!!!! I've done AE, Oxygen, pentosan, then for the past two years nothing but vet work as needed. It was just frustrating.

I did two months of Platinum CJ and have since switched to Exceed 6way (1 scoop a day). I am hesitantly optimistic about this addition! I am in the process of switching 1 horse to Renew Gold for a trial (and I did take before pictures). He started getting the exceed as I started the Renew Gold so still somewhat of a shotgun approach but he needed an overhaul.

I've had great luck with managing the inflammatory response in the gut, which then eliminates the over active inflammatory responses that rear their ugly head in other areas in the body, from allergies, to joints.  I had a horse who continually stayed sore in the lower back, through the SI, which i've always been told started at the hock and went up.  This particular horse would wince fairly dramatically even when I sweat scraped him after rinsing him off.  My vet recommended we inject hocks, stifles, and SI and even wanted to discuss "kissing spine" at one point.  In treating my horse for a severe respiratory condition and changing my feed program based on the suggestion of Dr. Schell at www.secondvet.com, I also inadvertently treated the other inflammatory issues my horse was experiencing.  Now you can palpate him anywhere from ulcer pressure points, to lower back, SI, etc and he won't even flinch.  When I had the vet out to pull blood for coggins, he asked me when i'd like to schedule a time to come in and get the injections done, and I asked him to look at my horse again.  He asked me where i'd taken him to get the injections, that my horse wasn't showing the same soreness issues as before.  I told him what i'd done and he was blown away that these type of results were achieved through proper nutrition and a different approach to attack the inflammation.  This is not a "joint supplement", this is controlling the inflammatory response from the inside out, and in turn, eliminating alot of the chronic issues we've been "band-aiding" for years.

There is currenlty a discussion on the forum at www.secondvet.com on the forum that Dr. Schell has opened up and will be willing to answer any questions regarding nutrition, diet, or other issues we want to discuss.  Check it out!  It's a great opportunity to continue educating ourselves in other ways to manage these conditions that we spend thousands of dollars treating each year.

winwillows - 2015-08-03 4:40 PM When Absorbine wanted to bring a feed through flex product to the market I was asked to formulate, produce and trial the product. This would become Flex+. Dr Gary Kaufman from Scottsdale AZ and I conducted and published a 55 horse clinical trial with that formulation that considered over 40,000 measurements. It absolutely proved to reduce inflammation, extend length of stride, and normalize hoof placement at the trot and lope in a fairly broad range of horses. This was a nice product who's formulation has since been replaced due to production costs, and changes in current science. I have not been involved in the current Absorbine formulation, and have no comment one way or the other as to effectiveness. Feed through products can work for some issues, but it would be unrealistic to assume that they will repair or improve every situation. Acute joint issues that can be resolved by a reduction in inflammation and an increase in both quality and perhaps quantity of synovial fluid can benefit from feed through joint health products if the formulation is designed to accomplish this. There are many joint issues that feed through products will not help. Some are beyond help from anything. One last issue. Not all supplements have either the amount or quality of active ingredients in them that the manufacturer claims. This is a place where a premium product from a reputable manufacturer is really worth the money.

Thanks for sharing. I find this very interesting. And supplements, much like compounded items, I am typically leery. But not above trying them. I have tried several. Then I read Herbie's story (that I love every time I hear it) and I think....maybe just maybe there is something to a feed thru.

Can you explain in a little bit more detail some of the things you did/changed to acheive those results? It sounds pretty amazing the difference you saw in your horse. I must say I got caught up in some of the hype of supplementation and who's feeding what. I recently tried to take a step back and really look at what my horse was eating and the benefits I saw, if any. I recently had his hocks injected and am really focused on things I can do/change to help him feel his best at all times and help prolong the life if the injections. I am very interested in hearing more about this!

Nothing feed through. Adequan, legend, pentosan, acetyl D Glucosamine etc. everything else is not only a crap shoot , it comes out in the manure basically.

I agree. Through the years I have have just about tried every feed through supplement you can think of. I have since learned that I get more bang for my buck and better results with an injection supplement.

edited: However, I do use MSM daily as a supplement. Can't say that I have noticed a difference because I use Pentosan but my vet swears by it and it's cheap.

Intersting read....not necessarily on joint supplements, but on joint health in general.  https://nouvelleresearch.com/index.php/articles/390-joint-dysfunction-are-injections-the-only-solution
