There's a mare, and her pedigree has some Hancock and Dash For Cash - there is NOTHING special in this horses predigree other than the good ole ranching lines on top and some older Dash For Cash lines on the bottom. Now this  mare is a proven 1D horse at shows with 500+ riders. There are all the records and videos to show and provide to prove this mare up, down, left and right. She has in two years has also won over $16,000.  The mare is drop dead gorgeous - bay roan, her conformation is excremely correct, her mind is amazing, she has an amzaing personality, she can go all day all night when rode and not give up, she is the grittiest, hardest running mare you will ever find. Now my question is - would you breed this mare, and who to?

I am not a breeder but in my opinion bloodlines are important in giving an idea of what the offspring would be capable of. Your mares accomplishments prove more of what she is capable of then what's on the papers. Proven achievement vs potential acheivment. I'll take proven any day lol. I don't have any suggestion of who to breed to but I just read an article ( wish I had a link) where they did a study with race horses that showed that a foals future athletic acheivment was strongly correlated with the dams achievement on the track but there was little difference in the achievement attained by foals from either elite sires or sires that were poor performers themselves. they also mentioned that many stallions considered elite have a poor percentage of elite foals where dams tend to have a much much higher percentage of elite foals. And also that elite siires with elite dams tended to produce more elite foals. Just thought that was interesting because many put so much emphasis on sire and don't think much about the dam too much.

Yep, I would. I would probably breed her to a stallion who was proven as a competitor in the barrel pen himself who's conformation matches hers. I would go the route of proven stallion to proven mare since her pedigree is more of an old mix of stuff.

Also look at what the stallion has crossed on- if a stallions best foals were out of AAA mares, then I would probably pass. Find a stallion who crosses on her type of blood. Firewater Ta Fame has produced winners out of roping/ranch mares just as much as he has running bred mares. ASOF crosses well on ranch mares too because they also dual purpose him as a roping sire.

Every colt I have ridden out of a proven dam was a barrel horse! Breed her to Royal and Famous, Firewaterontherocks, something like that
