Ok, gals.....I have the need to brand my gelding. I want the freeze brand verses hot iron.

When it comes to branding as we all know it's permanent so how do you decide what to use?? I am in no risk of losing our ranch but in today's economy I worry about using the 'ranch' brand and my second worry is if you use your initials, of course you're 'not' the only person with those.hehehe

Sooo, this leads me to his registered AQHA number and do the tattoo on the inside lip.

Any idea's???

Thank you in advance,
Stacy & Tucker

Find out what your state requires.

Where I live, there are specific requirements for brands, and you need to complete a search making sure the brand you want is not taken, then apply for the brand, and there is a fee.

Where I live it is illegal to brand any animal with a brand that isn't registered.

Yes, each state appears to have different guidelines, so definitely check into that before ordering a brand. I don't know what the guidelines are for lip tattoos, so maybe some of the track people can give you that information. That information goes through AQHA, or the specific breed association, so it wouldn't be registered with the state. Our brand is registered for the right shoulder, and there was also a spot on the form for number brands (we use ours for cattle, too).

There should be a brand catalog for your state with all the brands currently registered. My brand is registered with the State of Kentucky and must be used on the spot that is designated on the brand form.

Here's mine. A nod to the Bluegrass state.

I see you're in MO.  Hit up Flying 45 Branding Irons ... They are really good friends of mine that make ALL types and kinds.  They know the rules, can help you get it registered, and are incredibly creative!!  You can make it as traditional or as unique as ya want!

Do the regulations give you specific letters/numbers/symbols you can use or does it allow for a "create your own"?

When we did our brand we had to design a few, then they had final say (based on brand requirements) which one we got. Fortunately we got our 1st design.

We registered ours with the state. Very easy. The brand we had made is TERRIBLE, I want a brand that has been cast not welded! Any suggestions?

Don't bother with a tattoo.  They are NOT a theft deterant since a thief can't see it,  AND (at least around here) they do NOT check for tattoos at the sale yard.  But all horses MUST be brand inspected.
