I have a 14 year old mare that is out with several other horses and this year when it started getting hot she just started sweating buckets. The humidity was alot higher than it has been in years past but none of the other horses seemed to be effected the way she was. By 9 in the morning she was starting to sweat and was dripping wet the entire afternoon and into the evening. I have a 28 and 25 year old with her that wasn't taking the heat as bad. She always ate and everything just seemed drained. I have heard everything from heat stroke to heart problems as to why she is sweating so bad and with the weather heating up into this next week again i am alittle worried. Should I look into a blood panel or vet check up on her (had one this spring)? Has anyone dealt with this on a horse of theirs?

I have one doing this too. He was breathing hard also. I just bring him up and hose him off and make sure I use the sweat scraper. I put him in his stall and his breathing returns to normal and he doesn't sweat much after he dries out. I am not going to ride him until it cools off in a few weeks. We are having 98 to 101 degree heat with high humidity and light to no wind. If he didn't cool off and start breathing normally I would be taking him to the vet. Oh, and the goofball just stands out in the sun- he does have access to shade - trees and a run in shed.

Listen to their lungs they lose lots of heat by way of the lungs if they have an issue in the lungs the skin becomes the main avenue to rid them of extra heat. It never hurts to do blood work and put a stethascope to their chest. Honestly, I'm going thru this with a gelding of mine that came back from two months of swimming with an issue. He's getting better now but was sweating like no other due to a lung infection.  A few days off and some meds I can see a difference, I rode him and put him on the treadmill with good recovery HR and Resp rates, in 95-97 degree heat.

Not many mammals sweat to cool. Humans, horses, someone says elk do too...

There is a possibility your is tying up. Increase vitamin E and C to help out and electrolytes to keep hydrated.

actually you need to take care of the situation. If you wait till they don't sweat anymore its means dehydration. When she starts to sweat obviously more than the rest of the group does her breathing also increase with rapid breathes? When a horse starts breathing rapidly they are trying to cool their selves off. What happens is the gluteral pouches of the horse act as a thermostat for the horse but they can get stopped up and lead to infection which like a car can over heat. Allergies are BIG problem which causes this. You will see when temps get high with high humidity is when its at its worst. We have a mare that does this same thing and she has been on a product called TRUE SWEAT by Choice of Champions and has NOT had any issues in 3 years . Where before it was constant antibiotics , lose of top line , and extreme immune system drop.

Thanks for all the suggestions will be listening to lungs. The allergies make alot of sense. I have been fighting some allergies on her due to all the rain we have gotten. Breathing never went up she just sweat way more than I have seen her do in past years (have owned her her entire life). Just grateful for the help.

Do some horses just sweat more than others? We got a new horse in the spring. She was vet-checked. She also sweats buckets. She's very conditioned. She breathes normally. I don't notice any other physical problems. She does drink a lot of water but I figure she's replacing all she's been sweating out. None of the other horses sweat like this. The only other thing about her is she's a hard keeper and she's high energy. Sorry, I hope you don't mind I'm getting in on this thread....

Not a problem. I have found that all horses sweat differently. If you are scared of dehydration do the tent test on the side of her neck or push in on her gums and see how quickly the color returns to them. I wouldn't have posted about my mare but it was just unusual for her to sweat like that. Nothing else wrong just massive amounts of sweat. I was glad others were willing to share their experience with me so I could have an idea of a direction to go with her.

My horse is getting alfalfa this year which is new for him. I do have a vet appointment on Monday, but Do you feed them alfalfa if it's making them sweat a lot? I have noticed he drinks a lot of water and his urine is yellow but not dark.

I personally dont know why except maybe the Protein in it. I noticed it years ago. But this year the Humidity has been brutal.. I always mist them off and scrape them and Make sure i add water to feed and whatever else I can.my old mare 30 yrs old gets MSM for her breathing issues from this heat.. it helps her and I mist her face alot when I can.
