My 26 year old retired, former goat tying horse might lose his eye. He had a clear watery drip a few days ago, but the eye looked fine. I thought it was dust, allergies or something like that. Sprayed veterycin eye wash in it for two days. Then it got worse. Now there's buildup, like gooey gray eye boogers. And he started keeping it closed. Knew it was something worse than I originally thought, so I opened his eye as much as I could by pulling the lids open and there's a puncture, slightly smaller than the end of a pencil eraser, but pretty deep. He already had cataracts on that eye and could barely see out of it in the first place. Now he can't see at all from that side. Have the vet coming out today, but from the looks of it, it's pretty bad. I know there are tons of healthy horses with one eye. Anyone know what I can expect from this? Procedure, price, recovery, etc?

I know a few rodeo calf horses one eyed.. But I suggest until vet gets there to put fly mask on with duct tape covering that side.

I would n9t assume he will lose it. We just did this on an Open competitive horse. It was from beginning to ebd 5 months of treating. 10 weeks with a.lavage system in and then 3nweeksish she came back with a small scar but seems to have.go9d vision

The vet removed the eye today. Given that the horse is so old, is retired and not ridden, was already partially blind in that eye and the puncture was very deep, it was best to remove the eye according to the vet. The puncture was deep and had gone through the cornea into deeper layers. In the small chance that it could have been healed, he'd be completely blind in that eye.

I'm so sorry that your horse has lost his eye and you had to go thru that. I have a horse that is 17 and is was diagnosed as totally blind in his one eye a few years ago. I want to give you hope that your horse will still be able to function real well. My horse is actually able to run barrels and still does remarkably well. I plan to retire him soon, but he still seems to love his job. (looking back i had some clues that i totally missed at the time and i do believe hes been running with one eye for about a year before i realized it. I do notice i have to protect him going thru gates and into his stall and get him "lined up" properly. If he bumps the blind side, it frightens him, but overall he is a very happy horse. Hugs to you.
