| I know the basics of how to take proportional and fairly decent full grown horse pics, but my foal pics never turn out as well. What are the tricks to getting good foal pics? Lower center, higher center, aim at the flank instead of chest, or shoulder instead of chest, stand, squat, run after with a broom (lol!) or what? |

Location: OH | Be LUCKY---LOL. We will take 20-30 of each foal just to come out with one or two of each baby that we like. Thank goodness for digital cameras !!!!! I do like a lower angle though and we lead mare and foal out into the hay field by themsleves and the babies will usually start looking for the other foals and talking to them---that is when we get the best pictures. |

Be lucky is right. I swear when I DON'T have my camera he stands square and gorgeous. I spent about an hour last night and only got what's in my ad now. He's either head down and eating or in my face wanting attention. My foal doesn't give a crap about sounds or sights so getting him to raise is head to pay attention is dang near impossible! |

Location: Washington. (The DRY side.) | I carry my camera with me a lot. My colts )especially the bay colt.) are all over me like white on rice. So I use props. Not that that works very well all of the time. LOL

 Worst.Housekeeper.EVER.
Location: Missouri | I am NOT a professional, but I love to take photos. One of my pictures was recently included in an article in BHW about how to photograph foals. I literally laughed out loud! So surprised and honored, of course! But, funny too, because my philosophy is to take a million and one is bound to turn out ;)
Some tips from the article (May 2015,) paraphrased and my own added:
-Use a long lens
-Shoot during the golden hour (morning or evening). Love the look when the sun is illuminating each hair and shadows are not an issue. I also like to take photos on cloudy days. I have read one photographer say that he preferred to shoot with the sun directly above, but imo, you'd have to have a really awesome flash for that to work.
-For confo shots, I try to follow the same principals for big horses, which does require you to get lower.
I do not use an editing software, so I really do take a lot of photos to try to get it just right.
Your foal is a doll and I don't think you could make him look bad even if you tried! :) IMO, a longer lens will help you the most by allowing you to stay farther away! Try it and show us the results! :)
eta: here's an example with a longer lens. I take pics of my FIL's broodies and never have the convenience of a halter or help... so, I sit and wait and watch.
This isn't perfect by any means, but he is standing pretty good. Just wanted to show you if you observe from farther away, you can get something other than the inside of their nostrils or the shot of them running off after you smack their booty for chewing your camera strap! lol!

Location: Carpenter, WY | besides taking a kajillion and maybe getting 1 or 2 good ones, I think you can do alot with just cropping a photo and taking out busy backgrounds
