My mare is 6 and a big ole baby about her hocks and stifles (xrays are clean) and Adequan has done her wonders. I do the loading dose twice a year plus a round or two of pentosan. I don't do feed throughs' other than MSM simply because its a proven anti-inflammatory of all connective tissues (muscles were my main concern).

I do the loading dose twice a year and then maintenance doses throughout the months in between as well as feed JointFLEX.

Perhaps it depends on the horse and the reason why we are giving it as to which way is best to administer it.

I have had 2 reputable vets recommend loading dose for 28 days and then 1x monthly after to keep my arthritic gelding comfortable.

SG. - 2015-09-07 10:28 AM I went to the manufacturer as you suggested and yes the directions have changed since I read it last.

Wow

Studies show that administering Adequan®i.m. as recommended—500 mg intramuscularly once every four days for 28 days or seven treatments—better than results with four-injection series.*

I have been sorta doing this with one of my older mares, just because it seems to work.  I had been doing a box every 4 days  then she would get really good and about 3 months later I would need to do it again.  So  I will continue.  Thanks for the heads up that this has changed

I asked Dr. Major about this exact thing when I was there having him look Fiesty over.  We had done the loading dose on her in February.  He said that the loading dose is sufficient unless they show that they are needing more support, and even then we probably need to look at an alternative.  Twice a year is overkill.

That's what he told me when I asked him about how to manage my mare after having a bone fragment removed from her ankle.  He said if I felt like she was uncomfortable and needed it I could give it to her once a month, but he didn't see the value in giving it to her just because.
