Ok guys, im trying to figure up how many round bales i need this year, i usually use squares because its alot easier where im at, but theres only round bales around,
So im trying to configure how many sqaures to a round bale and how long it will last i have 3 horses all mares lol and one that is prego.
So im just tryibg to figure out how many sqyare bales in a 4x5 or 5x5 and how long they stretch out without wasting,

Go kill your other double post

in a 5x6 round bale there are 22 60# square bales of freshly cut hay ...

Weather before using will rob you of 25% of a round bale ... horses wasting the rest or weather rot will amount to another 15-20% ... even in a round bale feeder ... so you end up with around 13 square bales that horses ate from the original 22 bales in a 5x6 round bale ..

When buying round bales that will be stored outside ... buy the most recently baled you can find ... there will be less weather damage on 2nd or 3rd cuttings than on the 1st cutting that is an easy 6 months old this time of year ..

Are you feeding free choice? Most round bales are 4x5 and weigh 900-1050, with more weighing around 950. A rule of thumb for me is that a horse on a free choice grass round bale will go through about 35lbs/day, including waste. That is with really good hay and a hay ring. Without a ring it will be more, due to waste and I have seen that up to 40lbs/day at times, even with a ring. This will be decreased if you are feeding another hay/roughage source as they wont eat on it as much.

I calculate 1 round bale per month per horse, our bales weigh 900-1100 lbs depending on the year.

This is how I calculate it too and what my horses eat.

For 3 horses a round bale usually last about a month when feeding in combination with alfalfa hay. We also set it in the barn and fork it off. Less waste that way.

She has 3 horses. It will vary a little but 9-10 days you will likely go through a bale, if free choice. So about 3 bales a month. But you need a bale ring. One that is designed for horses or you will go through it much faster.

My broodmares and stud are going through a round bale every 10 days. They are in a dirt lot though and this is free choice.

My guys just never go through one fast enough and there is so much waste due to wet weather etc. Only way I will do one now is to keep it in the barn and fork/roll off to feed. If you can feed it under cover...that works so much better.

Right now we have 2 horses and a 11hh pony. They are turned out on grass during the day and kept on dry lot at night. When we have grass our round lasts us about 6 weeks. In the winter when we pull them off pasture it last about 3 weeks.

We fed round bales last winter for the first time. I have 2 horses and we were going through one bale every 9-10 days or so.

Wow! I'm jealous of you guys that use 1 bale per horse per month. I have 3 horses turned out on a 6-7 acre pasture. I only feed round bales in the winter when my grass dies, but I feed about a round bale every 5-7 days depending on the temperature.

We also will bring them in in bad weather and feed square bales in stalls, that usually extends a round bale a bit. However, I think since one of your mares is prego, I think you should account for more than that as well.
