When a horse is dropping large amounts of grain when they are chewing... what does that say to you?

A) they need their teeth done.

or

B) they are just messy eaters.

My mare is up to date on teeth and sometimes just drops her food everywhere. I can't tell you why but she only does it sometimes.

I have one that tries to cram/shovel as much food in his mouth per bite as he possibly can. So...he drops about half back out into the feed pan and just keeps shoveling it in until every bit is gone. His teeth look great and no other issues have ever been found. I think it stems from growing up in a herd situation where he was at the bottom. If he didn't finish his food quickly...odds were one of the bullies would run him off and finish it for him. Now even though he is fed in his own pen and let out when he is done...he still has that habit.

Mine dropped feed due to epm.  Other than weight loss the only other neuro symptom.

Check teeth...but some are just messy.  I have another one of those that will attack his grain.  He will get every last bit crammed in his mouth and then forget its' there and stare off at nothing or shake his head at the others while he chews and dribbles everywhere.  It's just him.

another boarder pi$$es and moans everyday about how messy her horse is with her grain. she's an aged mare, I'd say she could put on a little weight. So I naturally ask, "when is the last time she has had her teeth done?" ...Completely harmless question, right? She retorts with, "ohhh... probably 4-5 years ago." I didn't say anything about it since I asked that question.

She's been adamant for about a week now that she does not need her teeth done, and that she's just messy. I don't say anything about it since I asked and she is clearly upset that I asked. Now I know she just wanted to whine about it instead of fix it.

Thank you for reconfirming for me what a natural type of response would be.

ETA: not necessarily that teeth is the one and only answer, but that in many cases horses are saying SOMETHING when strange behavior starts up.

If she isnt up to date on teeth then its teeth . if she drops weight and is old Id put her on a texture feed and soaked beet pulp.. but some horses (not aged) have TMJ or jaws are out of alignment and can cause this to.. just something for others to think about when trying to figure it out.. but god 4 yrs and aged.. definately dental issue.lol

I appreciate your advice, but as well as my one question was handled.... I probably will opt out of trying to help her further!

Yeah my aggressive eater is current on everything including teeth. And...he's rather plump...so no weight loss issue. (He needs to be working out more just like I do) He's just like that with his feed.

But the horse you describe clearly needs some attention to her teeth etc if she is thin or dropping weight.

I can understand why you don't want to deal with the owner. He response tells me she likely knows exactly what needs to be done...just isn't interested in doing it.

My mare, I thought teeth, so I had them done...she's still just as messy as before, so I think she's just a messy eater.

Exactly, some horses are just pigs when they eat. Think about it, horses mouths were not designed to eat grain by the mouth full. THey were designed to pull forage from the ground and chew it. Grain is not long stemmed forage. My colt never lifts his head from bucket when he eats his oats, so what falls out goes back in for a second try. My other horse lifts his head up to chew and it goes everywhere. Both have excellent teeth done every 6 months-year.

IMHO, at an older age, and no teeth done in 4-5 year, yea, she most likely overdue....
I know we used to have one at our barn years ago that just at with his mouth open.... So, it is possible this one is messy, but I doubt it here.

This is too funny/sad not to post. I girl that I have known for about 50 years, has a horse that is impossible to get in the alley. If she beats him enough, he will finally go in. She told me that she has only had to have his teeth floated once. That poor boy is at least 18 years old. I am getting my two year old's teeth done this week. Those wolf teeth gotta go. I have one horse that drops feed not matter when she has her teeth floated. I don't really think that is and accurate assessment of a need to have them floated but it definitely can be a sign that the teeth do need to be checked
