For the past month or so I had started to notice my mare cough once after each of our runs. Would keep her head down in case she was bleeding but nothin,g until last night. After having head head down to eat grass she had a little bit of blood come out. I am heart broken, she is not yet 8 and has never had any issues like this. The weather out here has started to get very dry so I'm not sure if that caused it or not. Now for dreaded process of figuring out what to give her supplement wise to keep it from happening again. Any suggestions?

Cur-OST Immune & Repair combined with Total Support.  The story of my horse is on this thread and I had literally tried and done everything I could for him.  Spend over $5000 with vets and exceeded all treatment protocol for respiratory distress.  Don't panic, we can fix this!

My open horse bleeds, its not a big deal, a lot of horses do. Sometimes its just allergies. Mine has some damage from being run on the track....I give him Lasix. I dont mess with anything else. I know that there are supposed to be a million supplemental cures but until someone puts their horse on it for 30 days and then run them on it in humid or dry weather and then get them scoped after (just because the dont bleed "out" anymore doesnt mean they arent bleeding) then I dont believe any of the hooplah about the supplements. My horse doesnt bleed with Lasix. Its a pain in the butt....but it works for mine and he is a very bad bleeder.....lung infections are worse. You might see if you can get your mare in "the chamber" to help her heal faster.

Please before you start looking at a million and one supplements take your horse to the vet and do a BAL. My good mare had an off and on cough when riding and then coughed coughed coughed after a run and acted like she bled but nothing came out of her nose even keeping her head low. The BAL will be able to tell if the horse in fact bled and some possible causes, the horse may not even be a true bleeder. Mine was due to nasty allergies and since she's been treated for that is acting so much better and the cough is gone. I would look into that before supplements.

I second going to the vet and having her scoped

She may have a guttural pouch infection which can cause blood coming out of the nostril.

She could be a true bleeder

She could have burst a blood vessel in her nose

She could have a nasty lung infection and left untreated could develop copd, or heaves

Second Cur-OST Total and Immune. Wish I would have found it a year ago, I think it could have prevented my mares pneumonia

Definitely, don't just assume they are bleeding from the lungs. I had a mare that bled from her nostril (only one side). Friends said put her on lasix. I didn't because I didn't want to just assume she was bleeding from the lungs. Long story short on her is it was a dental/sinus issue that caused the bleeding, not EIPD. Second horse I had that bled (only one side) ended up being a busted capillary in his nose, very dry climate at the time and probably giving Pentosan to close to race time. He does occassionally have a warm up cough if the weather/hay/feed/climate is very dry. Either way, if I hadn't tried to be certain what the issue was and just put them on Lasix it would not have been the proper treatment protocol at all. Hope you get it figured out.

Ditto to this. Get the BAL done!

I have dealt with 5 bleeders before her so I have pretty much tried everything there is out there before. She has lived at the same place for 5 years now and it has been everything from hot and dry to humid and now all the sudden this happens. So yes and infection is an assumption on my part because she has never had and health/lung issues before. She is going to the vet this week to be scoped.

I struggled with the ones before her as well. All have been on different feeds and supplements. I understand each horse is different. It is just so frustrating to have to deal with this again.
