i tried out a ranch horse Wednesday and used my saddle and pad and after the ride there was a big dry spot on the right but not the left, sort of behind the shoulder area. Also a few Ruffled hairs on each side of his spine in the middle of his back. The saddle felt a bit wide for him, it sat a little low I thought. He's a big lanky paint but not real wide or round. Good withers and good back. I was using a Martin all around and 1" wool pad. Any ideas? I want to buy him but might do a vet check first. Even though I "know" the owners.

Hey may be assymetrical
Your saddle may have a warped tree
The pad may need a wash
If the saddle is too big, it may not have sat on his back square causing uneven pressure

Regarding your vet check comment...Do it. No matter how well you know and trust the seller, if they aren't aware he has an issue then how can you know? Sometimes that $100+ can save you thousands in the long run. Just my 2 cents from personal experience. Use a vet that has no connections to the seller.

All of these are very possible reasons but DEFINITELY get a vet check! The 2 times I didn't do it I regretted it and paid for it dozens of times over.
