What do you guys do to prepare your horse before a barrel race? I've seen people use DMSO on the legs, these patches above the point of their shoulder, magnetic blankets, and etc. I'm curious to see what everyone does to get their athlete's ready.

I have two horses with two different needs. I have a bleeder...mainly over the nasty humid months. I run him on Lasix so I try to give him his shot 2 to 2.5 hours ahead of my run. He gets BOT quick wraps on the front, BOT hock wraps, and BOT polowraps on the back legs...which I also run him in. I dont leave them on for very long in the summer...maybe an hour...maybe. I have Sore No More linement that I put on under them. I also put some where their back meets their butt under the my saddle pad. If Hollywood, my firecracker, will get Ranitidine before I run if I have it and he has been getting a little nervous. I might also give him a calmer...but I usually only do that if I have really been running him hard and he is taking life too seriously. I warm Hollywood up two or three times before...walk around...see the sights and then go get off of him. Cas, is a cool cat, not much bothers him. I might get on him to lope a few circles and visit with the gals if I have time and then I get off to let him rest at the trailer so that he can use the bathroom as much as he needs to before a run.

I will try to have enough time to let my mare hang out at the trailer for a while before saddling, with a magnetic blanket. Not sure if it does anything, but I guess it couldn't hurt... Let her relax with a hay bag and some water. Tack up, cruise her around the warm up arena. It's more difficult when they use the race arena for warm up, because she knows the difference. But mainly just keep her relaxed and warm until it's time.

My mare is a looky Lou BAD so we are always about the first ones to arived I tack up as quickly as possible and walk the arena for 10 min then warm her up she goes back to the trailer depending on weather she gets her hock wraps. Always her hay bag because she just seems happier. I don't have a ton of fancy thereby aquipment because the stuff I believe really works I can't afford LOL.

I do the back on track wraps and sweat my horses knees
(she has arthritis
) give her bute paste.. she wears a magnetic or BOT blanket depending on which one is cleaner lol starting about 4 hours out and take off about 30 before I saddle.. soft rides or magic cushion on ones I dont have soft rides for if theyre standing on concrete or rocks... liniment on legs and back before I saddle and put boots on
