RE: Registering a foal that had shipped semen
Common Sense and then some
Location: So. California
BARRELHORSE USA - 2015-11-02 11:45 AM Look on mares papers for DNA verification ... when ordering DNA with the hair kit always ask for the parentage verification rather than just breeder DNA ... costs the same ... and you can call AQHA registration for DNA information and check and see if your mare is on the stallions breeding report ... When you notify stud owner of having a live foal ... they will send you a pre-printed breeders certificate that is combined with foal registration papers and ask them to go click the release to register on their stallion breeding report so your registration will be smooth. This pre-printed form is sent to stallion owners directly after they file a stallion report so they can hold it if mare owner still owes them money ... and not allow the foal to be registered ...
The 5 panel test is not required on mares ... just stallions at this time ... it is a money maker for AQHA and not really viable since they have no history on having any of the diseases currently being active ...
If stallion owner does not have his pre-printed forms ... fill out a standard registration form you print off of AQHA site .... it is good to do this anyway so that you have studs and mares information if you do the online foal registration along with 5 photos of foal to use registering it ... form will give you what you need to do it ... It is also smart to create a file on your mare on your computer and scan all of her aqha papers and anything you send to register the foal to have a record of them in case you have registration problems or need to re-send anything ... also convenient when selling a horse to send papers etc etc via email attachments ..
Disagree on the highlighted portion. Even though the 5 panel is only required on stallions now, it will eventually be required on AQHA mares as well. It covers HYPP, MH, PSSM1, HERDA and GBED. The latter 2 are recessive, requires 2 copies of the gene for the horse to be afflicted. The former three are dominant, requires only one copy for the horse to be affected
(thus the need to have the mare tested as well!
)
PSSM1 is real. Some horses can be managed through special diet and exercise, others not so well... Go read the thread on PSSM Buyers Beware and then make your decision in regards to 5 panel testing. It's not expensive and well worth the piece of mind!

Oh BHUSA, you so right. Why no current horses in the AQHA have been diagnosed with any of those five diseases at all. The youtube videos of horses suffering from HYPP and the videos of their skin sloughing off when they have HERDA are just a marketing gimmick.

I know it's a lot more complicated to register a foal from a shipment of semen rather than that stud being on sight. I haven't done anything but I have a nice mare abut as cow bred as they come and I wanted to breed to a super race bred stud that did well on the track and has nice confo
(which I found
) I just don't want to do something stupid and not get it right and then have a grade horse that shouldn't be. Do they pull some hair? Some kinda Dna proof?please walk me through this:
)
Everything is the same except the parentage verification. All breeding stock must be DNA typed. Stallion owners must turn in their stallion report before Nov 30 of the year she was bred with your mare on it. Then AQHA will issue breeders certificates to the stallion owner. When your mare foals, you notify the stallion owner of a successful birth and they send this pre-printed form to you. You may use that form or you can go online and fill out the online application with pictures. When you submit the application, the AQHA will require a parentage verification through DNA. When you get the kit, you pull tail or mane hairs with the roots on and send it to UC Davis in the envelope provided. When the test is complete AQHA will issue your papers, barring any problems with the results or anything that was done incorrectly or not done at all. Hopefully it will be smooth for you.

You can call AQHA and ask them if your mare has been DNA typed.
(AQHA doens't always send out a sticker to put on their papers these days. I only got one for the mare I did last year because I ASKED.
