| I know this has been beat to death lately but I still can't get it straight.
I feed 50/50 grass hay and alfalfa hay.
1 lb whole oats that are 40.1 test weight
1/2 cup whole flax.
Salt block free choice
12:12 mineral block
We have a pasture I basically turn the horses out for a couple hours for exercise. It is a cattle pasture though so I have a 12:9 loose mineral out for the cows. I notice the horses lick this and the 12:12 blocks periodically in their pens.
So obviously their not getting enough mineral from the feed and need some added mineral?
Should I continue with just a 12:12 block in their pens?
Or I was considering Prime Performance UltraPlex as a feed thru
http://www.primeperformancenutrition.com/products/ultraplex/
or Gateway Products Su-Per Form
http://www.su-perstore.com/m7/sfeform--su-per-form-crumbles.html
I am open to other suggestions but it needs to cost less than about $.35 per horse per day. |

Location: Oklahoma | I feed Adeptus Nutrition Augment to my horses. It's a great vitamin/organic trace mineral supplement. I know the owner/founder of the company and still consult with her on my feed program. My horses are dappled and healthy. They get bermuda round bales and alfalfa pellets. |

Location: West Texas | You are perfectly fine. I wouldn't change anything. Do you have salt? I really like your feed program. As long as both are top quality hay, I think it's great.
Licking mineral doesn't neccessesarily mean they need something. The idea of a mineral is for them to eat it. If your horses look really healthy, then they are.

| I think they do it for a new taste, kinda like we do. I find some days I want salty snacks and other days I want chocolate. |

| I don't use blocks, I only use loose, as horses tongues were not designed to lick like a cow.
Loose mineral and loose salt separately |

Both of the supplements you have listed are pretty typically misleading in their information. By reading the labels, the first product seems to be between 95% and 97% a combination of Alfalfa and Molasses, with the majority of the remaining formulation being Dicalcium Phosphate. Dicalcium Phosphate is two parts Calcium and one part Phosphate. If you are feeding half alfalfa in your forage, you do not need this either.
The second formulation seems to be alfalfa meal without the molasses, though the ingredient list on the web site does not actually list ingredients but instead lists some analysis numbers. I am not aware of any state where that would be a legal ingredient list, so who knows what is in there.
For my own horses I would pass on both.
Be sure your cattle mineral is from a plant that does no medicated products.

| Thank you winwillows, very helpful.
The cattle mineral is Purina and I had asked them a question unrelated about my cows they brought that to my attention. I plan to set horse safe mineral in that pasture next summer for the cattle. |
