Extreme Veteran Posts: 494	Kind of spinning off the other thread- How do you guys slow work a rollback horse? I have one, but have never dealt with the rollback style on where to position them to tune on one. Do any of you guys know of youtube videos you can share of slow work so I could get an idea or certain drills that are beneficial??

Veteran Posts: 239	I don't know where to find specific drills, but I can share what I do personally. I will trot or slow lope to my turning point behind the barrel and when I get to the spot where I want her to plant her behind, bring her shoulders around, and go the opposite way (i.e. where she will roll back in the pattern), I will sit, use my outside leg and get her to spin whichever way I'm turning, just in that spot. I do maybe 3-4 revolutions, encouraging forward motion with her shoulders (so she crosses over in front, not behind, and she is keeping her inside pivot foot planted), finish in the direction I want her pointed to her next pocket, then lope or trot to the next barrel. The caveat is that your horse needs to know the basics for the turnaround before you go to do this obviously. I only have to tune her in a few times through the pattern on this drill and then I will just go and lope through and I find it really helps get her to snap her shoulders around behind the barrel. I also work on rollbacks off the pattern but when I go to roll her back, I leave her alone in the roll back and then spank her the 1st stride back the other way. This gets them really firing out of the roll back. Hope I explained ok. I am no trainer, LOL. Just what works for me.

Am I really the Weirdo? Posts: 11181 Location: Kansas	Clifford really wants to have a rollback style and Chance is a little stiffer turning too, so I work both of them on being round and keeping their hip in as they approach the barrels. I'll also drill them on moving their feet through the turn by walking up and trotting around. Rollback style horses tend to get a little sticky behind a barrel so I want to encourage them to keep their feet moving. If Cliff gets stuck, he's probably going to drag the barrel over on his way out, and Chance won't clock well if he doesn't keep moving around the barrels.
