Spin Doctor - 2015-12-10 8:37 AM What about costs? To me, that is the elephant in the room. Most rodeos, no matter what level, can't afford any more than what they are doing. In example, the one I lead, I took my high dollar Kiser Arena Worker in to use. No way our fair board can afford to buy one as we have too many other priorities. ! I don't know if I can afford to donate its use every year as it is an expensive piece of equipment but it does make a huge difference. Maybe we need to increase the stock/run charge to help pay for or reduce the added money to pay for better ground? Previous post also discussed multi-event arenas. Our biggest money maker (that pays for most of the rodeos we have) is the demo derby. It leaves the arena a mess but we make a lot on it as we have very little costs..... If you start making more regulations, we will either lose events or they will change associations. Another example-did you know that the barrels used must have the bungs on the bottom? Our barrels where painted by volunteers, with the bungs at the top. A judge threated to make us turn over the barrels so the writing would be upside down. I said, next year, we will be an open rodeo....that changed his mind. Would be great to have covers, but covers disappear, paint does not. Yes, the ground is a concern, but this is kind of like the bull riding-you enter knowing that things are tough and dangerous. Yes, it could be better, but this is no surprise and I doubt it will change. Could the NFR be held with no barrels? Good lucks.

Not the elephant in the room, offers have been made to replace and work the dirt at no charge.  Expense is not a factor.

My reference was not really on the original topic of the NFR. Was referring to other rodeos. Sorry, will stay to the topic.

I wonder if it is that easy to replace dirt? Remember Thomas and Mack is in a pretty tough area to get trucks in and out. I suspect they keep this old dirt fairly close. If new dirt hauled in and old out, where do they bring in the new and what do they do with the old?

According to google, arena is 143x110 or 15,730 square feet. At 1' deep (?), would be 582 cubic yards. A truck load is ~24 cubic yards. That would be 25 loads or so. Not that many in reality. If 2' deep, it becomes 50 loads and that starts adding up.

Yes, I have read that they have had volunteers to replace the dirt. But what that does that mean? To consult, gather, dispose, truck, get permits, care for in the off season- is this all included?

Who actually owns the dirt? In our facility, we own the dirt we use in our building. Renters than haul it in and out to place on the cement floor. We replace it every year at a cost. Luckily we only use 4-5 truck loads as it is not a rodeo arena, but a show area. I suspect either T/M owns it, or the NFR does. Either would probably have to pay to store it and manage it so it doesn't blow away?

I agree, it needs replaced. I couldn't imagine all the crap in the dirt. Everything from pyrotechnics, to old barrel markers, I would suspect. Not to mention all the trash and manure that builds up.

But probably not that easy. Imo.

Didn't Chasin Firewater have a pretty bad fall with Jill Moody a few years ago, which resulted in his stifle injury that they had to put him down because of?

He had feet issues that couldn't be resolved.

If I remember correctly - he fractured his stifle in that fall which ended his career. But he died (or was put down) because he developed a lung issue.

Our beloved Chasin Firewater ascended to greener pastures on April 23, 2015.
We are eternally grateful to Dr. Cliff Honnas and his staff at Texas Equine Hospital. They exhausted every possible avenue to save Chasin from the catastrophic complications of a stifle injury that he initially received at the 2011 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. "
