I for one think Stingray is fine, I think that she isn't shutting down the clock, but she isn't as long strided as some of the horses....the ground isn't great, but some of the horses there at the finals are flat out RUNNERS, I mean like super fast...they could make a lot of the elite horses running right now look "off"
...We just got a tough bunch of horses in there this year between Sara's horse and Taylor's horse, they are like freaks as far as how quick they are building up speed between the barrels and on the way home they might as well be race horses they are so fast.
I think that Stingray is fine...I just dont think that she is as FAST as those horses are as far as them having the ability to make bobbles and still clock on bad ground. Stingray has been there and done that...she isnt a reckless runner/turner and I dont think that she has the speed that those particular horses happen to have...and that is ok...doesnt mean she is hurt, or tired, or worn out....just means she is running against a couple freaks of nature right now who are making a lot of the field look slower than we would expect.

Yeah, I read something about him having colic in one of the Barrel Racing Reports.

But she's been consistently faster in the past.  It's not that she can't run 13s, she just isn't for whatever reason.

Say whaaat? Stingray won the Ellensburg, WA rodeo where it's a 17 sec pattern. If she's not as fast in her turns or between the barrels how is she beating big "runners" that still have just as nice of patterns in big Sandy pens?

Stingray held the arena record before Taylor Jacobs broke it. She is striding short for some reason. She has clocked in that arena in the past faster than any horse has run yet this year.

I think what Motivated is saying is, she isnt necessarily pushing herself to the limits on ground she isnt feeling safe on. Babyflo for example is running hard and going for broke and shes taking quite a few slips in the process. Stingray is being safe and she still clocking very respectable. Some barrel horses are faster than others just flat our speed wise... Stingray is no doubt fast but her times come from her precision and lack of mistakes.

I ran a mare like that who would get beat bad in a straight away but was consistent 1D (won Congress and AQHA world) because she didnt make mistakes... Stingray is being smart.

I am not saying that she isnt as fast in Ellinsburg Wa LOL I am saying she isnt as fast here...between the barrels and home for whatever reason...and my reasoning is that this pen suits these horses better this year....call it the ground, call it whatever you want...but this years horses are faster than Stingray in this pen...maybe not in every pen everywhere every day of any given year haha....BUT what I am saying is I think she is fine. I dont think she is sore. OR old. or tired or WHATEVER> I just think she is slower than these horses in this pen this year on this ground.

Now I get what you are saying. I honestly think the ground is a huge factor. Make it just a hair looser and a tad deeper stingray would clock with Bo and Bling... she's a smart seasoned horse that knows how to protect her self when needed. The other two have ran steller but too the risk of falling. It's too bad it's here that stingray has to safety up. Yes it's rodeo but man... give the best the opportunity to run their best especially at a place like the NFR.

My take on it is if you look at the other horses, like Bo, he isn't clocking like he has in the past either. He holds the arena record at a 13.37 but the fastest time he's ran this week is a 13.77. I personally feel the ground is really slowing them down. It's not holding under them & Stingray is making sure she stays standing. I know the ground isn't the greatest any year but the last two years it's been horrible. I feel sorry for the ladies & especially their horses.

I see her hitting on her front end going into the first barrel. My gelding does the same thing if he doesn't like the ground or is sore. I'm not going to speculate as to why she is doing it, but something is weird there. She never hits on the front end like that. Last night was one of the worst in my opinion. I wish they would prepare the ground so we could see the true ability of the caliber horses that are there.

One thing I noticed is she didn't look as fit as I'm used to seeing her ..... Maybe just the tv adding "10 " lbs ??? Anyone else think that ? I love that little mare , but yes she's not as snappy or firing as hard as I'm use to seeing her

If Sherry was worried about the ground for Stingray, she certainly wouldn't have run her at the bottom of the ground.

merdth6 - 2015-12-10 1:35 PM Stingray hasn't really been clocking well for a while.  Maybe she's a little burned out?  I remember Sherri first running her at the Thomas and Mack as a 6 year old. I don't think she's not running her because of the ground.  BTW every year the ground is an issue at the NFR.  It's all apart of Rodeo.  All these girls run all year on Rodeo ground.  Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad.  It's all apart of the sport.  Do I think they should more time and thought into the gorund there?  Yes, most definitely!!!  But it's part of the sport!! Same as having crappy steers.
Stingray has been clocking well enough to get to the NFR.  Sherry didn't just pull her out of the barn for the big show.

karen

She ran Trip DuPerier's horse, Atlas that she won San Antonio on, quite a bit this year. He had colic surgery right before the NFR. He probably won more money then she did.

Yep. She didn't get to the NFR by only running on perfect ground.

My point was...she wouldn't have run her at the bottom of the ground...she would have waited and run her when she was more towards the top.

I was agreeing with you. I don't believe the ground issue is the reason she chose to jockey another horse.

Look at us humans. We don't all hit our peak in athletism at the same time in ages. I am sure horses don't either. Some may be at their peaks at early teens and some may hit it in their late teens.
