My fiance just got a new job with benefits. This would be the first time I have ever dealt with being a spouse's dependent on health insurance so I don't know what would be reasonable... Our two options are: $320/mo for a plan with a $0 deductible using in- network doctors that does great covering basic doctor stuff and a $400 Copay for emergency room but leaves you high and dry if you need surgery. OR $520/mo for a plan with a $3000 deductible that doesn't help so much with normal doctor stuff but pays 60% (after deductible) of In-patient/ surgery and emergency room visits.

This is for 2 people. I probably wouldn't have such a hard time figuring this out if my fiance wasn't just now getting back to work after not being able to work for an extended time due to a random freak accident that left us with $35K in hospital bills... So I'm like OK if we would have had ER/ *In patient* help we would not be in this crap BUT he may need basic doctor coverage because he will probably be permanently messed up on his right side... (shoulder, knee & ankle)

Are y'all responsible for 100% of the cost of the policy?

To me, anymore, insurance is for catastrophic situations and some pricing help for minor things and office visits. For instance, just had doc visit last December, charged $85 to insurance and they priced it down to $50. I had $30 copay then so they sent the doc an additional $20. In 2016, we only get two visits with a $40 copay and then it goes to deductible until insurance will pay again. So..... I will still be submitting those to insurance so that the cost will still get knocked down to $50 but I'll be paying it. That's the way most things will go unless we're hospitalized or need surgery, etc. The smaller things and office visits will come out of our pocket unless we meet deductible but at least we'll be paying at the insurance reduced rates. To sum up, I'm more fearful of a huge hospital bill than I am off doc visits, ingrown toenail removal, etc and so the policy covering the larger bills would be my choice. You're not alone, most people are having to go to something similar, at least us self employed folks.

Also wanted to add there are a few smaller companies out there that offer ten doc visits a year (up to $75/visit coverage ) if you're concerned about co-pays. Not sure the cost on it (it would have to be tiny for me to do it) but they do exist. There are also ones like Combined Insurance and Aflac that help with some of that routine type stuff.
