Wanting to know what anyone has used to melt ice around horses lots and walking paths. With all of the rain this Fall / Winter I am scared to death of when it does freeze someone is going to slip and fall. I know of horses who have fallen on the ice and had to be put down. I didn't know if rock salt would be an option or what. Any suggestions are appreciated.

We always just get loose stock salt and use it. We use it on our deck all of the time. The only thing is if it gets on your yard it can kill the grass

Salt and sand. My Dad used to grub dirt out of the corrals and throw it across the chopped ice watering holes for horses and cows to drink. Around the house and barns though, we always went through a lot of salt. Sometimes it would get so cold it would freeze regardless of the salt, so that's why we mixed sand in, so there'd be some traction no matter the temps.
