 I Chore in Chucks

Location: MD | Both got done yesterday, everything went according to plan... they just had some sharp points and one had a pretty good hook back there but nothing crazy.
How long does everyone like to wait? |

| If its just routine and there was really nothing harsh like sores in the mouth or not a lot of really deep filing etc, I will ride them same day even. My horses love getting their teeth floated, just like I love to get mine cleaned. lol Maybe ride in a snaffle or something lighter if you feel better but I would have no worries. |

| Usually the next day. If something serious was done, I might wait 2 and then use a hackamore. |

| My equine dentist says three days, she's also a barrel racer and a respected horsewoman. |

What is her reasoning behind waiting three days? |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I have always waited at least 2 to 3 days, to give them time to heal if they got bumped with the rasp that could cause some sorness. If you just have to ride the same day or the next then a halter are a hack.. |

Same here. If a tooth was pulled I'd wait longer. Ouch! |

Location: Where I am happiest | We just bought a new 3 now 4 yr old and got her a week and a half ago. Her teeth had never been done. Vet pulled her wolf teeth and she had very sharp points that created sores in her mouth. Poor girl I just cant imagine and what a nice minded filly to go on like she was with all that going on in her mouth. Vet said give her a good week before working again but it's looking like it's going to be more like 2. So we are ponying her. |

Location: N Texas | I recently had my gelding's done, just routine, no extractions or anything out of the ordinary...I took him to a barrel race that night. He was acting and feeling great, and gave me zero issues. |

| I asked when I had mine done this fall. I had four done my two and two I had for training. She said 3/4 could be ridden later that day , but I waited a day anyway. The 4th was 14 years old and had never been done he needed n extraction and was trying with all his might to bite down hard enough on the jaw opener thing to break it and he was sore for some time I gave him a little more than a week off. |

| I'm assuming from the forces they exert biting down, and from having their face cranked open, and unless you get them done every 6 months, they're all going to have some ramps and edges and adjustments to do. Then just giving them time to reset their jaw and neck muscles. I had a high filling once from the dentist, took a week to get back in, I was miserable. Threw my whole face and neck out of whack. Plus then you can factor in any nicks or grazes they get from sharp edges.
The lady says three days, and I'm letting mine have it! She didn't specify a reason, and I didn't ask. Seemed perfectly reasonable to me.

Mine would still work if I ran them the same day but since that is not a necessity, I don't do it.

 Own It and Move On
Location: The edge of no where | I don't like to ride the day they were sedated. I'll ride with a hackamore the following 2 days if I ride. They're probably ok to ride sooner most of the time, but I want to make sure I don't irritate any issues. If wolf teeth have been pulled or other issues - I'll go a while longer before putting them back in a bit.

Location: on my horse | my girl tells me, shes extremely picky about her mouth from bits to dentistry and regardless I give 24 hours off but if shes sore she doesn't even want to let me look and usually I can play with her face open her mouth etc. Forget about getting a bit in there not that I would try if I wondered about soreness.
Last summer we had and oh SH*T fall she ended up saving both our butts and took a pretty good hit to her mouth when she got up and stepped on her reins in the process... Her mouth was sore for 2 weeks she was reluctant to let me check it out so we just waited, had vet check done that night, chiro out etc. etc. etc. |
