Whole Oats vs Crimped or Rolled

I am posting this, because the question has been raised on this forum often. This is a very informative article, based on actual research. Besides not needing to be processed, the whole oat is higher in fat and other nutrients than rolled or crimped. They also have a longer shelf life. The age old answer to the question of which is best, seems settled to me in favor of heavy weight whole oats.

I feed heavy triple washed cripped oats. The reason being I have a horse that has good teeth but still gulps the whole oats. I have even picked apart the poo and sure enough all the good stuff is still inside the oat. When I feed cripped I may see a hull every now n then. Wanted to add the other horse does fine on whole oats.

Steam rolled oats are great for senior horses as their teeth are usually in bad shape. Rolled oats are similar to oatmeal-get it in the mouth and swallow-the husk has been removed so it's highly digestible. We had a 26 year old gelding get really thin one winter as he was unable to chew his hay. He gained weight and got fat again on the rolled oats. When he died two years later
(probably heart attack
) he was fat and felt great.

Here's another simple, but not as informative explanation of the differences:
