So you guys may have heard, but a few weeks ago at Sunland Park race track in New Mexico, some horses started getting sick. After a few deaths, these horses tested positive for the equine herpes virus, EHV. The track has been under quarantine now for going on 3 weeks. I work at turf paradise race track in Phoenix AZ, and just today there were 2 positive tests for EHV! One of the horses has already deceased. The track should start a quarantine in the next few days, if not tomorrow! So just wanted to give you guys that are in the area a heads up, be careful traveling to shows right now and unknown horses! Hopefully they get this under control before it keeps spreading :) be safe out there everyone!

We talked to our trainer at Sunland yesterday and it seems they have gotten it under control there, but still no racing for a few more weeks. Scary stuff, hope it is contained.

OK, SEVERAL things here. One, Sunland Park in NM has been under quarentine for 2 weeks now from horses testing positive for the neurological form of EHV-1. To date per the veterinarian of the New Mexico Livestock Board 3 horses have been euthanized per owner request because of the neurological symptoms of their horses. 27 horses total tested positive with a blood sample and deep nasal swab sample. As of Tuesday this last week, there have been no new confirmed cases. Racing will more than likely resume a week from this Saturday and the quarantine lifted two weeks after the very last positive test. Second, there is one confirmed case in AZ at Turf Paradise in Phoenix. One horse was euthanized at TP that was symptomatic of the EHV-1 but did not test positive so that leaves it to one confirmed case. Last of all, these are the only 2 areas where there are reported cases. The article that is randomly floating around on FB if you scroll down to the bottom of the article, it is from May 11, 2010. I was at a meeting yesterday with the NMLB and this is the most current information on both tracks in NM and AZ.

 Oklahoma tracks and training centers are on lock down right now.  We operate a training center and just went on lock down this morning.  No horses hauling in or out. Also Oaklawn Park has banned horses hauling in from Arizona and New Mexico

EHV is no joke or laughing matter - it is serious and this only the beginning of the season. I hope the quarantines are effective, but I feel like this is only the start of another major year for this virus .....

II have a horse in Sallisaw currently and picking up one this weekend going to harmony. I'm trying to make a quick decision on what I need to do with these colts. Do you know which way the vote is leaning on the tracks going on quarantine? Aaarrrggghhh... This is a mess.

OKLAHOMA RACETRACK POLICY REGARDING EHV-1 EQUINE HERPESVIRUS
OKLAHOMA CITY - Due to the serious nature of a recent outbreak of the neurologic strain of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) at racetracks in the southwest United States, the following policy has been adopted jointly by Remington Park, Will Rogers Downs, Fair Meadows at Tulsa, the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma, and the Oklahoma Quarter Horse Racing Association. This policy has been developed in collaboration with the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission in order to safeguard the welfare of horses participating at Oklahoma racetracks.
ATTENTION HORSEMEN:
1. Until further notice, no horses will be admitted on the grounds of an Oklahoma Licensed Racetrack if they are coming from a county with a facility or racetrack that is under quarantine for the EHV-1 Equine Herpesvirus, or if they are coming from a county adjacent to a county where quarantine has been implemented.
2. No trailer, van, or transport vehicle will be allowed to enter the enclosure of a racetrack unless the shipper signs an affidavit that he/she has provided the following information for every horse on their trailer, meeting the requirements below, regardless if the horse is to remain at the racetrack. The following documentation must be provided for every horse (including pony horses) at the stable gate before they will be permitted to enter the enclosure at Remington Park, Will Rogers Downs and Fair Meadows.
a. A current health certificate issued within 72 hours prior to arrival at the track which shows the vaccination record for each horse. The horse must have been vaccinated with an FDA approved modified live or killed virus vaccine for EHV-1 not less than 14 days and not more than 60 days prior to date of entry. The veterinarian must provide the date of vaccination, the brand, serial number, and the expiration date of vaccine.
b. The health certificate must also contain a statement by the issuing veterinarian that he/she has physically examined each horse within 72 hours of issuing the health certificate, and
i. the horse does not exhibit any clinical signs of the virus;
ii. the temperature of the horse was normal at the time of the examination;
iii. the veterinarian verified with the owner/trainer that the horse has not been exposed to a suspected EHV-1 positive horse;
iv. the veterinarian verified with the owner/trainer that the horse has not been stabled in an EHV-1 quarantined county or adjacent county within the past 21 days.
3. Horsemen are required to keep every horse admitted to or on the grounds on a current 60 day FDA approved EHV-1 vaccine or EHV-1 booster schedule until further notice. Evidence of a booster vaccine will be required prior to any horse reaching that 60 day deadline.
Any individual that is found to be responsible for a horse entering the enclosure of a racetrack that does not conform to these conditions will be ejected from the grounds and will not be allowed to participate in the race meeting.
All trainers and horse haulers are urged to take extreme caution when transporting horses to properly disinfect and sanitize their trailers if there is any chance they may have transported an exposed horse.
Matt Vance, Remington Park vice president of operations, emphasized the importance for all involved in horse racing in Oklahoma, to adhere to this adopted health and safety policy.
“First and foremost, Remington Park will always do all it can to protect the health of its equine population. After working with all track management in Oklahoma, the OQHRA, the TRAO, leading equine veterinarians and the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission, we believe this comprehensive plan is best in order to prevent the spread of the EHV-1 Virus in light of the recent outbreaks in New Mexico and Arizona.”

Β

No, tracks do not require horses being vaccinated. The only thing they require is negative coggins and health papers if coming from out of state.

If you read above, they are basically on lockdown. You are required to have an EHV-1 vaccine 14 days prior to arriving and a 72 hour health certificate sta ting the horse has been vaccinated and had no temp at time of certificate being issued.
