I just called my vets office and the receptionist said they recommend EWT W/West nile for pregnant mares a month before foaling. I was under the impression not to give pregnant mares West Nile.

Opinions?

Also my new mare I am unsure of her vaccine hx the past couple years (the seller I bought her from was not helpful AT ALL). She's due in April. Would you stick to giving one shot one month before? And booster right after foaling? Or give her one now and again in 4wks?

I give EWT, West Nile, and Flu/Rhino to my broodmares one month prior to foaling. Giving it at this point in pregnancy should transfer to the foal to provide protection until they are old enough to receive vaccinations.

Thanks. I just wanted to confirm people did give West Nile to pregnant mares. For some reason, I was thinking it was a big "No, No".

What brand do you use? I was thinking about ordering the West Nile Innovator+ EWT for my girls per vets recommendation. I may go ahead and add FluVac Innovatorยฎ EHV-4/1.

Leave your mare alone ... why put her thru a fever and toxic shock situation when west nile does not provide any immunity whatsoever to any horse after it is given ... It is too late to be giving any type of rhino or any other vaccine to a pregnant mare ...

Here is the only thing everyone should keep on hand at all times for their babies under 6 months old in case they should get hurt ... TETANUS ANTITOXIN ... http://www.jefferspet.com/products/tetanus-antitoxin?via=5338848b9f...

If you want to do something to benefit the mare and especially the baby ... worm your mare 2 weeks prior to foaling to clean her out .... Mother Nature tells her new baby to eat some of her poop to start his whole food good gut bacteria ... worming will save foal from getting a gut full of worm eggs ....
This will keep your baby from looking like so many photos you see of unhealthy looking, long hairy pot bellied foals with owners claiming they have hay bellies ...

I always keep a bottle of PEN G on hand to aid horses immune system if they get hurt and if a broodmare has a tuff time and shows any fluid // blood drips from her vulva after 24 hours from birthing ......... 20cc for 5 days works ..

DO NOTHING ... last thing you want is a sick mare .. just be ready to increase the amount of feed you feed a nursing mare... keep her fat so the hot summer months do not drag her down while nursing her baby ...
GOOD LUCK ...

I give EWT, flu, Rhino combo (I don't give West Nile) six weeks to a month prior to foaling as well as worm with Ivermect. That way the antibodies your foal receives from the mare in the first few hours gets transferred to the foal.
Two days after mare foals I'll hit mare with Quest Plus. I do not give my preg mares Quest. Been doing this same routine for 20 years with zero problems.

I see several advocating worming their pregnant mares a month to 6 weeks prior to foaling .......

Have you ever read the label inside the box... ivermectin is a 60 day wormer .. 6 weeks is 42 days and a month is 30 days ... which means the worms are laying eggs in the mares poop for the foal to eat when he takes his sample bite of her poop .....

Give your wormer 2 weeks prior to foaling so it has time to rid the mare of egg laying worms and poop is virtually clear of worm eggs for the foal to munch on .. ... lol ..

I only give EEE/WEE/Tetanus. I used to give rhino but have stopped due to a mare aborting after giving it. I never have given West Nile to a pregnant mare.

The wormer is effective immediately after being given. The effectiveness tapers off as the horse is exposed to more worms. I worm with ivermectin within 24 hours after the mare foaling. That eliminates adult worms and larva in their digestive tract the foal might ingest. It doesn't do anything to encysted strongyles. You would have to worm with questplus or ivermectin gold to get the encysted strongyles.

No.
No.
No.
No to all of that.

You're free to do what you wish on your own horses, but intentionally giving bad advice... are your people sending a ship to take you back to your planet, or are we stuck with you? There are plenty of us offering to donate money for fuel.
