Anyone have a horse with a paralyzed flapper? Does your horse have a hard time breathing when you exercise them... trotting... galloping. Did you horse make noise when they breath? Just curious what your experiences are.

I had one that would roar, it's not fair to ask one to work hard much less race when they can't breath properly. We did the tie-back surgury on her. Problem solved, no more roaring, she could breath, and her work ethic improved dramatically.

We have one in the barn. He coughs a little, mostly when eating and breaths noisily during exercise. Do my knowledge though the vet has cleared him for all exercise. She does dressage so it's hard to say if a more strenuous event would be off be table though.

I share a broodmare with a fella that has a flapper problem, Patriot Kate is her name.  We think she injured it when she ran into a fence a few years back.  She is fine at a walk but anything more than that you can really hear it and she is very lathargic which she wasn't before.  So that is why she is a broodmare now.   Usually not worth the cost to repair if it is even possible.

I unknowingly have one.  We just found out last fall.  I had leased him to a youth and they were winning everywhere, took him to the vet to get a check up before they turned him out for the winter and the vet discovered it.  His was about 50% paralyzed, he is 21 and was still clocking and whipping butt.   It was a 6 week layoff and approx $1500.

So they had surgery done.  He is scheduled to be back running now, but htey are making sure he is in tip top shape before running him.  They are entered tomorrow, but she may be on one of my others jsut as a precaution.  He was cleared to run 2 weeks ago.

We have one, she made noise during workouts so brought her in for a scope. She wouldn't fire very hard and lost her run. Did the tie back and problem solved. No issues with it and very worth it. We have another that became one after being exposed to an unknown toxin, paralyzed both sides. It was either do the surgery or put her down because she would suffocate if she trotted. Did the surgery and she's just fine.

How much does the surgery run and what is the down time? What is the rehab bringing them back? Also, is there a risk for doing the surgery? Tying the flapper open? Can they go back to running barrels?

Our gelding roared and was a bleeder. Had flap surgery corrected both problems. Cost was about 1800 dollars and was down about 3 months due to infection at surgical site. Ran great after that with no issues.
