Well, the 3 year old most definitely did not work out. His ad made it seem like he was so broke, but had no more of a handle than my friends gelding with 3 rides on him. He was also very thin and was worked hard before I got there. People suck.

Next potential new horse is a 9 year old cutter reject, lightly started on the pattern. Link to pedigree below. I've heard horses with peppy san badger on papers can be quite the buckers. Anyone have experience? Her videos make her look extremely broke and well rounded.

I think you'll like this horse.

The Peppy is so far back and diluted, 3 generations out and only in the pedigree once .... I'd ride it and see how you click. Depending on price, x-rays are not a bad idea. But just because it is a cutter reject doesn't mean it has been rode til the joints were screwed. There could be a multitude of reasons why it didn't work out .....

Could you give me some ideas as to best sites to find these types of horses and what to look for? Thanks!

I have a peppy san badger gelding ( grandson) and he fell down and jumped up and went to bucking. When he went down I lost the reins and couldnt pull him up so I just said woah and he stopped. I rode a different peppy san badger horse that was humpy and bucked alot. I think it depends on the individual

I found the 3 year old on the bulletin board at the local tack store. This 9 year old I found by calling a cutting trainer in the area and asked if he had anything for sale. Id rather go locally and through word of mouth. People lie too often!

I feel like I am in a similar situation as you, so I can relate. Long story short, I'm in the market as well and it is both exciting and exhausting. I wrote down all my preferred characteristics (age, height, discipline, potential, color, breeding, etc) and used it to base all the horses I came across to what I want in my next horse. I too had thought I would buy a young prospect that was already going, a cutter reject or started Reiner, but figured I want to be able to ride, have fun, and haul and not have to be on my toes, or be a teacher all the time.

I think you really need to sit down and figure out what you want out if your next horse. I agree with whoever mentioned looking into ranch horses. I believe you will find it much more enjoyable to work with something that has a solid foundation already and you just need to point them in a direction.

I understand having a budget can be limiting, along with location.

To answer your original post; confirmation and clean legs, hoof health/shape, overall eye appeal, and for my personal search for a nice broke gelding, a solid foundation, ranching experience, and something that loads and hauls well. I feel more confident dealing with owners who express their concern with who/where the horse ends up as well. This simply tells me they generally want what is best for the horse.

Good Luck in your search!

Cutting mare DID NOT work out! Holy cow. I can't ride a cutting horse apparently. She was ridden before I got there, was wet, skin and bones, scrawny thing. She was WAY too sensitive. Ridiculously hot, the second you would barely put your leg on her she'd go to spinning. Nearly got out from under me several times. I was loping circles and trying to get her loped down a bit and quit being a fire breathing dragon but she just got ****yier and wanted to blow up on me. Definitely a NO GO. She was broke nice, soft in the face, bend, flex, counter arch, etc. Woulda been a nice horse for someone more experienced maybe. But not for me..

The search continues....

Look for a ranch horse.  Check around locally for any ranchers who breed good horses.
