Location: Central Washington | I have a friend that has to use her breeding for Chasin Firewater this year and has expressed interest in using our 1D Flit Bar mare that we retired last year. I have never leased a broodmare, what is fair to charge for something like this?
There will be a contract and insurance.
TIA! |

| What kind of profit would you have made on the mare if you had bred her yourself? That is the oportunity cost...So i would charge for all costs plus enough to cover what I would have made. |

I leased a gelding like this also, the lessee took care of all expenses concerned with the horse & his upkeep & kept him insured. Worked out fine for us. |

^^^ Us too. We are lease-ing a broodmare as we speak, and she is with us on a feed lease. We filled out the AQHA lease paperwork, so I think that was a $20 fee. |

I wish more people did this......I was told $400 a month to lease a broodmare plus all her expenses when I inquired about a few mares that were listed for lease. |

It wouldn't be worth it to me to do a lease in that situation. You'd have the mare for at least 16 months ($6,400 just for the lease alone) if everything went smooth and you got in foal right away and weaned the foal at 4 months old and returned the mare. I would rather just go buy a mare. Of course depending on the mare's bloodlines/record, you may not be able to. |

This right here
Carry insurance on the mare cover the costs and give it back in as good or better condition as you got it.

| I leased a mare of mine for $700 + all fees but I kept her until until 3 months prior to her due date. Insurance + contract is a must. |

If you are looking for more, I do an "every other foal" with one of mine. What ever they breed to, they re-breed the following year to the same stallion or equivalent value.
But then again, I offered an egg from my daughter of Sunfrost mare for nothing to a longtime friend and mentor.
Friendships shouldn't be lost over broodmares.

| I leased a AAA mare which has produced winners with top bloodlines for 5k this yr. I have to keep insurance on her and return her when the foal is weaned.
edited to add...I do not owe 5k until I get a live foal on the ground.

This mare is priced at 3xs that. She is a producer... and there are not many bred like her, if any at all. |

To each their own. You are obviously looking for a very specific breeding and performance record. There are tons of proven performers and producers on the market now days for very reasonable prices but if it's worth the $ to you to get that specific mare, more power to you. Only thing I thought when I saw your post was how much $ you'll have in the foal before it ever gets here and what will that do to the cost of it compared to someone who didn't have to spend the extra 5k. Idk if that makes sense out loud but it does in my head lol. |

If it would be for resale purposes alone...I surely would not do it. However, I am hoping for a filly to run and add back to my broodmare band.
It is all in how much a horse is worth to someone...
For sure I have done free leases all the time. I have had really nice bred mares given to me. Yet, its all in what you are wanting in how much you will spend. |
