First Time Helmet Wearer

I am 54 years old with many responsibilities on the home front as well as at my job I have decided to start wearing a helmet. My friend and both bought one at a recent horse fair and I wore it for the first time yesterday. I must say that while I was anxious and excited to wear it, I almost didn't. Funny thing happened though as I placed it on my head and buckled the strap...I really did have a sense of freedom. Started with the typical warm up of walking and trotting and then when we started loping, this is where my comfort level really started. The horses I am riding are not mine and since they don't get used a lot, they tend to have a lot of energy and just want to stretch their legs. It truly was amazing to me how relaxed I felt as I let them move out more than I would have in the past ... I was able to tell myself to breathe, relax, look up and above all, have fun. Each horse responded beautifully and I was able to lightly work the reins to bring them in to a more relaxed lope...it didn't take me too long to get used to the helmet and believe the more I wear it, the more comfortable I will be with it.
My reasons for not wearing one before have nothing really to do with stigma or anything other than I just don't like stuff on my head. I'm not a hat wearer generally so for me, wearing a helmet is more about just having something on my head. I figured if I was gonna give it my best shot, I would do it in style .. bought the snow leopard print of Fallon Taylor's line....lol

Do what is right for yourself and not what others think because you are the one that has to live with the aftermath. If it makes you more confident then go for it. I want to see great runs. I don't care what someone wears on their head.

I have a business and a family that depends on me so I started wearing a helmet back in June or July. The craziest thing was the confidence I got from it! I no longer give a crap what people "think" about my helmet. My Son is now excited to wear his because I do. The people that are worried about my helmet would probably run better if they worried about themselves and they sure as heck don't pay my fees. I never worry about it coming off and i have seen a ton of people blow runs and waste fees trying to hold their hats on.
