| ... buying a young (20 month) old with a hernia the size of a pinky finger? He was born with it and it has been slowly closing on its own. |

| Depends on price.
If the pedigree is appealing, the conformation is correct, and I want the horse, the yes.
If the horse is still a colt, I would get it repaired when he is gelded.
If it is s filly, I would get it repaired immediately |

| Would not give it a second thought if it an umbilical hernia.... a simple surgery can correct it..... alot of foals have them and people never know, hence the breeder is the one that usually has it fixed before sale..... |

Location: Kansas | I'd buy him. I have a gelding who is 5 and still has one. Several vets examined and stated it would never cause an issue because the "hole" was too small for any organs to be pushed through.

| The vet that I worked for repaired serveral just like that. If it is finger or smaller sized all he would do is push it in and then put on one of those little green bands. Worked like a dream! He consulted with a specialist and that is who told him to do them that way. |

| If its already closing on its own, would he even need surgery? It had been about 3 finger widths and is now down to a pinky. |

Location: California | It wouldn't stop me. My coming 4yr old gelding has one. Vet that gelded him said it wouldn't cause any issues and didn't want to fix it. I do plan on getting it fixed before his barrel career starts. |

I would get it removed ... no surgery necessary with this technique ...
I have seen it used on lots of babies .. I have been fortunate not to have any with
problems ..
Vet uses two pieces of bamboo/wood with screws in each end as a clamp ...
he clamps it on the hernia right up against the belly ..
It will fall off within a couple of weeks and no more hernia ..
Under $50 procedure ... they do put the baby down to do it ..
double check for wolf teeth and if they have not been removed have it done
at the same time ...
Sooner you do it the better ... before you go to break them to saddle . |
