Location: Kansas and loving it | I am looking for something different to do with my 3 year old. I want to wait for barrels until she is older. I am thinking of taking up roping, but I never have tried it. Hard to find any reined cowhorse around SW Kansas either. I won't be competitive, just something to build a good relationship on. |

Location: Displaced Iowegian | I would not recommend roping since you do not have the expertise. You would have problems trying to train yourself AND the horse at the same time. Also, standing quietly in the box and running out is stressful for even the seasoned roping horse. I would work on reining patterns or pen sorting where you can work your horse slowly on cattle.
edited to add: There is nothing wrong with starting a 3 year old on barrels and taking it to a few jackpots to "exhibition". It gets them used to the sights and sounds, etc without the stress of running.

Location: Kansas and loving it | Thanks for the ideas and tips. I have found team sorting club, but I would rather just low key practice. |

Location: LuluLand~along I64 Indiana | i would suggest a trail course or super horse .... you can work on getting your horse super broke and where you can manuver each body part before you ask for speed or barrel training. |

Location: Kansas and loving it | I am going to the gypsum hills for a 2 day trail ride. I am not knocking starting a horse on barrels. It actually has more to do with me than anything. Trying to get wet saddle blankets on us both. lol. It used to be that you could go to a roping practice and chase cattle out of the arena, or go behind score cattle. But the last time I went, lots of girlfriends doing that. |

Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR | I got my young horse ready to start on barrels by playing with obstacle courses and penning the donkey. Need patience and self control? Pen the donkey. Need quick feet? Pen the donkey. By the time they figure out how to get him back in the pasture with no backtracking or side trips, CONGRATULATIONS. You're broke enough to be a barrel horse. |

This- I bought a 3yo to futurity who picked up the basics of loping a very pretty pattern in about three weeks.... in February of his three year old year. I had to do something to keep myself enteretained until December So he learned to open the trail gate, walk over bridges, back through an L. The only thing that ever tripped him up was a flying lead change on cue. |

You can also play this game with roping steers.....it's good fun even if you don't want to rope. |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | Sortings are great. Any of the Ranch and Stock Horse associations are an option too. You can check their websites for shows. Extreme Cowboy Race or ACTHA rides are good. Jumping is another option. Western Dressage, open shows. Heck, I show everything in everything! |
