I'm always amazed at the people that get into something new and they always buy brand new everything. Next thing you know they are trying to sell everything as one group because they are getting out.

Oh my!!!  A mini.  I completely agree.  I did not grow up with horses, but my husband had a little experience.  I was SOOO fortunate to first, understand I had no idea what I was doing, and second, was lucky enough to have purchased a very forgiving little cow horse for my kids and I to "learn" with.

I live very rural but there are some homes on standard lots a a couple of miles away.  I'm still talking about 20 miles to the nearest gas station or grocery store, but there are some lots.

A friend owns 7/8th's of a block, or all the lots on 1 block up in town.  The people that own that 1 lot recently "leased" it to another friend to put a horse on.  OMG.  This is 90% sand, very little grass, these people have never owned a horse and no one knows yet if it can be ridden and. . .they are going back home (snow birds) to CANADA next week.   Also, there is an old, like a few years old round bale of moldy hay on the lot.  They were excited because there is hay there.  This is a disaster waiting to happen and my friend is going to be the one they try to contact.  Someone else from town, who has also NEVER owned a horse, is going to feed it for the next 8 months till they get back.
I think this is going to work out really well. . . . .

...and then there are those that really think about the responsibility of child rearing, decide it's not for them, and are then deemed selfish by others. No win situation.

But yes, it would be nice if people getting into horses did some serious thinking before taking the jump. That said, we all started somewhere and had to learn some things thr hard way, sometimes at the horses' expense.
