So, I recently bought a 3 yo mare that is broke to death. Since buying her, I've ridden her probably about 5 times and she's done great. Well, today she started off the exact same way as all of the other times. However, this time I rode her a bit longer than I did the previous times. Near the end of our ride, she started to pin back her ears and would kick out one leg whenever I would ask her to lope. I was concerned she was hurting, so I got off of her to to see if she would flinch or anything as I felt her over- nothing. I even lunged her afterwards as well and she didn't kick out or anything. Was she just exhibiting "mare-ish" qualities today and testing her boundaries with me? Thoughts?

So, she's only does this "kicking out" ONE time? I probably wouldn't be concerned until it becomes repetitive. At that time, my instinct would be that she's a brat and needs rode through it...then I'd move on to soreness, ovaries, etc...

Mine started having an attitude when we changed our routine into a longer ride than normal. I guess I fail to give them credit for how smart horses really are. She had become so used to our typical ride time and was irritated when asked to do "extra" work. Creatures of habit like us I guess. Mine was not sore just needed to remember who was in charge of how long our ride was or what was asked. After a couple rides of varying time that attitude was behind us, hopefully yours is as simple as that :

It turns out that she isn't sore and just needed a reality check that she's not the boss! :
