Location: IL | My 7 year old mare is rubbing her hindend off everything again. Just started yesterday and now today it's way worse. She has weeping sores. Raised up and has rubbed her hair off. I had a fecal done in January and it did show a high worm count. She was wormed and is up to date now. Anyone with any ideas? Her tits are clean. |

Location: IL | I was considering another fecal count and I also have those terrible gnats too. I spoke with my vet and this mare always seems to be wormers than my others and reacts to everything. He thinks her immune system isn't working very well. Any ideas on how to boost a horses immune system? I'm going to worm her again for pin worms since they don't show up in a fecal. |

| Look into "sweet itch". It is hyper-reaction (allergic) to the midges (Culicoides) you are referring to. This is not uncommon and is treatable.
A vet can help you out with choosing the best treatment for your animal. |

I've researched sweet itch and really didn't find anything that helps. I do have a call into my vet. Waiting for him to call me back. |

May or may not be relevant, but I had a mare who would get open, weeping sores because she was allergic to alfalfa. That being said, in your case if it isn't an actual bug problem it is probably an immune system reaction. |

Location: Florida.. | Pinworms.. they will lay eggs outside near anus and cause extreme itching and this would be a symptom.. most be dewormed or power packed then dewormed again 3 weeks later..talk to your vet about that. |

I spoke to my vet last night and I wormed her again. Vet still can't believe this horse would still have worms after all the deworming I've done. She had Ivermectin 6 weeks ago. If she doesn't clear up from the wormer, then I'm going to have to say it's sweet itch...He prescribed dex for 5 days for that and I will have to get something started to boost her immune system. And a good fly sheet. |

Location: LaBelle, Florida | My mare is allergic to noseeums...midges or whatever you want to call them.
I put her on garlic last year and noticed a difference. I started her back on it in January. I also, now have her on some charcoal that is supposed to help flush toxins from the system. I have seen some small improvement with the addition the charcoal.
I also, keep her stalled during the day, a fan hung in the stall and multiple auto fly misters in the barn.
My girlfriend told me to add Skin so Soft to the regime. I have only added it to the spray I use when I ride her.
Good luck with finding/controlling what ever is causing her itch. |

ok least its ruled out I was just saying one of my retired mares had that issuewhen she was being kept other then my farm while I relocated and it was pinworms had laid eggs by that area and she literally rubbed herself raw.. hope you find anwers.. its frustrating.. |

Location: wherever my daughter's running | We have one horse that gets the sores you are descriding from ticks. I am talking tiny ticks that I have to remove from the sore with tweezers. They bury in and can be very hard to see. Our others don't have this problem - he is just allergic to them. |

Thanks! I'm really leaning towards pinworms. Since I wormed her again, she quit itching and her sores have calmed down. Knock on wood!!! This mare for some reason is just real wormy. I had a fecal test done in 1-16 and she was loaded. I gave her (per vets instructions) Anthelcide EQ, then 10 days later she got Quest Plus. 10 days after that I did another fecal and she had dropped in worm count but not as much as vet thought she would, so she got regular Quest and was put on a daily wormer for 2 months. At Easter she got Equimax. My husband was riding her after that and she pooped and he noticed BOT's in her poop! We couldn't believe that after all that worming and neither could vet. I've also been having stomach ulcer problems which I'm sure is tied into this whole worm problem. I wormer her again 2 days ago and I'm putting her back on a daily wormer. I am in the process of getting a hair anaylsis done. Maybe she needs something to help boost her immune system?? Hoping to figure this out. I really like this mare and she has alot of talent. Thanks for advice!!

Location: MS | This may sound crazy but since you said you were having ulcer issues too...My mare is on a worming schedule. A month or so ago I did the 15 days of OxyUlcer and even though she had just been wormed a few weeks prior she had major worms in her poop. Pinworms and bots. It also made her slick off and she looks better now than she has in several years. I don't know what it is in the OxyUlcer but it definitely got rid of her worms (that she shouldn't have had). |

I really think the worms are causing alot of the ulcer issues. Those Bots detach from their stomach linings and cause ulcers. My vet and I talked about it the other night. |
