| So I figured out my head horse that I'm trying to turn barrel horse likes a hack and my hand on his neck starting the turn. He was doing great on the pattern in a super light bit then when he got more solid started fighting me on the backside. I rope on him in a Carl's hack with vet wrap thick on the nose but I think I still need less for barrels. Little s won't be quite enough guidance with speed. He will drag his butt when you sit so I don't need much whoa and travels kind of upright but tucks well so I don't need lift. I need as much flex as you can get from a hack. He's short necked and backed. So maybe a wrapped chain nose? I like the JD Ed wright but I think the shanks are too long. Looking at the clampitt but I think it might be too heavy. Will a chain nose be that much more flexy than a rope? I can put a softer rope on one. I have a rope Jim Warner I haven't tried yet. |

IMO put it low on his nose with a tightish chin chain, if you don't have enough whoa but enough flex raise it a touch.....If I want a lot of flex I use a carls hack or little s and do quite a bit of two tracking.........I would consider the carls hack pretty light with quite a bit of flex if you have it lower on the nose... |

I love the Carl's and I will probably end up in the Carl's with speed but I think he needs less right now and the little s is not enough. I have it pretty high though. He hates curb pressure so maybe I'll lower it and put a leather curb and tighten so it makes a little more contact. |

Does the rope or chain nose have more flex? I'll wrap the chain. |

| I'm a hack hoarder so I have all of the ones mentioned, I also have 2 horses on each end of the spectrum so the one I ride in either a Little S no vet wrap or a Clampitt and the nose wrapped and a cotton chin strap and it's actually very mild! The other the jim warner was too much so I run her in a stivers and she really likes it.
My suggestion would be a clampitt or stivers, whatever you can get your hands on! Clampitt has a little more feel and flex though |

Location: southeast Texas | Little S. Drop the nose. Use a wide English type curb. If he doesn't like that wrap curb with vet wrap. Still to much then rope curb.
If still too much make a side pull. |

Location: Heart of Texas | I would say the placement of the nose piece has a lot of influence in hacks too, so before ruling one out, try it in different placements on their nose with varying curb chain length. Good luck. |

Location: Kansas | I would darn sure try the Jim Warner. It is my very favorite hack in the world, and I think it works on almost any horse. I also have a Trap Hack that is a little lighter than the JW and I like it too, though it doesn't offer as much flex and lateral control as the JW.
I have a JW that the rope noseband came undone and my dad & I unraveled it the rest of the way, then I braided it together and Dad pinched it into the brackets on the side of the noseband. That has made the noseband softer and more flexible, and for whatever reason, it works on every horse I ride. I've won money on 8 horses in it and they ran the gamut of styles.
One thing I've done to tweak the effect of that hack and others is to take the curb chain off, replace it with rope, wrap it with vet wrap, or even just a little piece of string to hold the sides together.
