How long do you exercise, do you trot/loap, do you work in the arena or in the field, how far of a distance do you go a day? any comments would help as i am looking into ways to get my horse in better shape!

I've been blessed with a very athletic horse. I keep him legged up by long trotting with girlfriends, usually about two or three miles. We do a lot of loping and trotting big circles on the side of a hill. We also back up hills. I do this three times a week. I also make sure I breeze my horse once or twice a month. I think it helps prevent bleeding.

I alternate what I do. And I think thats the most important thing. Usually twice a week I just work in the area, long trotting, loping lots of circles, big and small, make them bend, do excercises with tires or barrels and go through the pattern a couple times depending on what the horse needs. Then at least once or twice a week I trot up hills in my pasture and then lope circles either on the side of a hill or around trees or wherever I can safely lope. And then like once or twice a month when Im pressed for riding time I will just ride bareback in the round pen, I think its relaxing to them and It helps with my riding.
